Salary: $70,000 - $85,000

Reports to: Inspector General

Position Summary:

The Compliance Officer acts as project lead in ensuring that employees receive fraud awareness education and ethics training provided by the Office of Inspector General. Training is provided on an ongoing basis, via virtual and live instructions. Additionally, the Compliance Officer conducts investigations related to non-compliance matters including Conflicts of Interest, Employee Disclosures, and Unethical Conduct; as well as assist the investigative team with other matters impacting the integrity, accountability and compliance with internal policies and the law.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in business or appropriate area a plus.
  • Experience with compliance-related, audit, fraud, and ethics-related issues in the workplace.
  • Investigative experience and/or professional certification in related area preferred.
  • Proven experience in public speaking and delivering presentations to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently, effective interpersonal communication skills and report writing.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides oversight and process for outreach and fraud awareness communications activities.
  2. Develops, and updates compliance materials as needed; and provides informed guidance on

questions related to fraud reporting, whistleblower rights, and the Code of Ethics provisions.

  1. Leads the reviews of District information collected through the Employee Disclosure process;

to identify actual, perceived, and potential conflicts of interest warranting further investigation.

  1. Examines a wide variety of records, procedures, and systems of internal controls to detect

non-compliance or fraudulent activities for further review or investigation.

  1. Assists with research of fraud trends and ensures effective interdepartmental knowledge

transfer and communication.

  1. Plans and conducts district-wide Fraud Risk Assessments, and compiles results for action.
  2. Assists in investigations of compliance-related issues and prepares conclusive reports for review and approval by the Inspector General.
  3. Supports, collaborates with, and provides consultation to team members regarding compliance-related issues.
  4. Attends networking meetings, as necessary.
  5. Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned by the Inspector General.

Security Clearance:  

Internal Applicants  

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.  

External Applicants  

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
