Salary: DFT Salary Schedule, plus $5,000 annual stipend

In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
A Master Teacher is an exceptional practitioner who leads from the classroom and cultivates their peers’ ability to deliver excellent instruction and increase student achievement. Master Teachers are not administrators, nor do they take on administrative roles. Instead, they teach students half of the day to model best practices and generate useful materials for their school, such as exemplar lessons and student work samples. The other half of the day, they provide a range of support to their peers, such as leading one on-one observation and coaching, facilitating collaborative time, co-planning with small teams, mentoring new or student teachers, or even modeling in other teachers’ classrooms.
The goal of a Master Teacher is to improve a team of teachers’ abilities to effectively plan for and deliver high-quality instruction in pursuit of better outcomes for students. By creating distributive leadership structures in schools, Master Teachers — in collaboration with school leaders — will increase opportunities for feedback and growth to drive increased student achievement, while building their own capacity as leaders.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess and provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
- Successful candidates who possess degrees beyond a bachelor’s degree will be eligible for the appropriate salary differential.
- Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA) in Elementary Education, Secondary Mathematics or Secondary English Language Arts.
- Must have at least three years of teacher experience with Highly Effective or Effective (or equivalent) ratings.
Essential Functions:
- Lead one-on-one observation and coaching.
- Facilitate collaborative professional development time.
- Co-plan with small teams.
- Mentor new or student teachers.
- Model lessons and instructional practices.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of Master Teacher interactions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Application Process:
- Candidates who meet the certification and experience requirements will receive an email with the link to the second part of the Master Teacher application.
- Candidates who successfully pass the Master Teacher application will be invited to attend an interview.
- Candidates who successfully pass the Master Teacher interview will be invited to join the Master Teacher eligibility pool.
- Eligible Master Teachers will interview with school leadership teams and will receive confirmation of placement once selected by a school.
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
External Applicants
In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
