Position Title: Senior Forensic Auditor  

Location: Office of Inspector General  

Salary Range: $80,000 - $99,000: commensurate with education and experience  

Reports to: Inspector General  

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Position Summary: 

The Senior Forensic Auditor is responsible for performing a full range of investigations and forensic audits. He/she should possess knowledge and understanding of how to conduct investigations involving allegations of criminal and administrative matters while utilizing data analytics, traditional, and sophisticated investigative techniques.   

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or public administration. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or business and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or Juris Doctor (JD) may be considered in lieu of the master’s degree.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of interviewing and document analysis. 
  • Strong verbal and writing skills, including report writing (the interview will include a writing project). 
  • At least 10-15 years of professional level forensic auditing / fraud investigation required. 
  • Professional certification as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) is preferred. 
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite of products. 

Essential Functions:

  1. Examine allegations of fraud, waste, abuse, corruption, and other irregularities or improprieties on the part of District employees, contractor personnel and vendors doing business with the District, in line with the Principles and Standards of the Association of Inspectors General.  
  2. Proactively apply knowledge of current fraud schemes to develop an investigative plan as well as identify areas of risk for fraud, waste, abuse, and financial mismanagement. 
  3. Ensure investigations are handled with discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.   
  4. Prepare clear, concise, and conclusive investigative reports; setting forth the allegation(s), evidence, findings, and recommendations; for review and approval by the Inspector General.  
  5. Examine a wide variety of records, financial transactions, procedures, and systems of internal control to detect fraudulent or wasteful practices, secure evidence and prepare statements for possible referral for internal discipline, and/or to law enforcement for criminal prosecution. 
  6. Team leader in reviewing voluminous financial records and data pertaining to investigations. 
  7. Develop and maintain confidential materials in the OIG Case Management System (CMS). 
  8. Develop and prioritize a heavy case load; ability to manage multiple projects at a time. 
  9. Attend networking meetings, as necessary. 
  10. Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned by the Inspector General. 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
