In accordance with the agreement between the Organization of School Administrators (O.S.A.S.) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, Article 6.4, Promotion Procedure, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary:  

The Bilingual Parent Engagement Coordinator is a full-time position for immigrant/ multilingual families, including all categories of new arrivals to the United States. The Bilingual Parent Engagement Coordinator supports ongoing communication to multilingual family members to remove barriers and to promote school engagement. This position requires an attitude of wanting to retain multilingual families in the schools, and to impact parent programs and workshop that encourage multilingual parent involvement. This position supports outreach outside of the district to prospective immigrant families to help grow enrollment.

The logistics of this position involve activities related to District and school-sponsored events, and supports home visits and site visits to District families. The Bilingual Parent Engagement Coordinator manages and leads the Bilingual Parent Advisory Council. The Bilingual Parent Engagement Coordinator requires someone well-versed in Social Justice, Equity and Inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years experience working in a school or district setting with English Learners or within an agency that supports the immigrant/ English as a Second Language experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly orally and in-writing with parents and families about school-related matters in multiple languages directly or from accessing language services.
  • Fluent in Arabic, Bangla, French, Hmong, Spanish or any other World Language. (Strongly Preferred)
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
  • Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences or comparative degree aligned to Education, Social Work, Counseling, Social Justice or Immigration.

Essential Functions:  

  1. Create professional development in collaboration with Training & Support Coordinators for English Learners.
  2.  Promote and communicate Language Access Services within the district. Train key staff on language access services (i.e., clerical, dean of culture, admin, and teachers)
  3. Liaise with the Interpretation and Translation Coordinator, as needed.
  4. Disaggregate English Language Proficiency Data, in coordination with the Bilingual Data Analyst, in order to align appropriate multilingual parent services.
  5. Strategize with the Bilingual Director to develop and execute plans for home and site visits.
  6. Attend Title I and Title III Parent Teacher Association Meetings.
  7. Attend Bilingual Department Weekly Meetings.
  8. Conduct outreach to prospective families and support specific principal and other school leaders in hosting recruitment-focused events (school tours, open houses, etc.)
  9. Build relationships on behalf of the district with community groups, faith-based partners, non-profit family and community agencies, and other potential partners; share school information through community presentations and by inviting community groups to school events or attending events of outside agencies.
  10. Distribute important information/communications related to immigrants and English Learners (e.g. flyers, announcements, lawn signs, brochures)
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Bilingual Education.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
