Salary: $75,660.00 - $93,718.00 

Reports to: Exceptional Student Education Assistant Superintendent or Designee

In accordance with the Agreement between the Organization of School Administrators and Supervisors (OSAS) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary 

The Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Program Supervisor works under the direction of the ESE Assistant Superintendent or designee to coordinate, monitor and evaluate the comprehensive continuum of services at all levels.  In collaboration with District and community stakeholders, the ESE Program Supervisor for will ensure students with exceptionalities are provided with sound educational programs, experiences, and services commensurate with their needs and abilities. The ESE Program Supervisor serves as a resource to parents, District personnel and the community.   

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A master’s degree or higher in Education or field related to special education 

  • Valid full approval or endorsement in at least one area of special education from the Michigan Department of Education 

  • Approved, or is qualified for approval, under Michigan Department of Education requirements for Supervisor of Special Education (full or temporary approval) 

  • A minimum of¿five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience in special education, three (3) of which must be at the  level; or five (5) years successful employment in a related service support position 

  • Knowledge and understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education and how it relates to the development, implementation and monitoring of ESE programs, services, procedures and processes 

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills 

  • Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems 

  • Demonstrated leadership ability in past assignments 

  • Experience and strong orientation toward urban school systems, preferred 

Essential Functions 

  1. Monitor and maintain documentation related to overall student progress on IEP goals and objectives 

  1. Serve as a resource for District staff, families, and students  

  2. Monitor ESE progress on State Performance Plan indicators, including but not limited to Child Find, Timely IEPs, and suspension/expulsion  

  3. Identify trends in school performance for students with exceptionalities based on data gathered and as compared to same age peers without exceptionalities   

  1. Interact with parents of students with exceptionalities for the purpose of defining and implementing services addressing the unique needs of each eligible student 

  1. Implement and maintain ESE programs through collaboration with District personnel, colleagues, and community stakeholders 

  1. Participate in the design and coordination of professional development activities to inform and equip staff with knowledge and skills needed in special education programs 

  1. Lead staff in the development and evaluation of ESE programs and services for continuous improvement, to ensure compliance with state and federal mandates, and the alignment of specialized instruction and assessment with District curriculum standards 

  1. Monitor assigned programs and projects to ensure alignment with district and state curriculum and instructional objectives 

  1. Assist with recruiting, recommending and assigning teachers and support aides in compliance with special education rules and regulations 

  1. Prepare written documents for the purpose of responding to inquiries and conveying information 

  1. Maintain appropriate student and program data to support the development, presentation and management of program budgets 

  1. In collaboration with District personnel, develop and deliver parent and community trainings that promote cooperative and supportive working relationships to improve the outcomes of students with disabilities 

  1. Review and recommend teaching/learning materials and supplies 

  1. Participate in ongoing professional growth and development to remain current on researched based best practices  

  1. Provide assistance with the investigation, resolution and implementation of corrective actions related to complaints, due process hearings and compliance monitoring 

  1. Provide consultation to ESE Leadership Team, principals, curriculum leaders and supervisors regarding program operations, compliance, curriculum modifications, accommodations and purchases of instructional materials and texts   

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
