In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary: The College Transition Advisor works diligently with families and the community to assist student’s in the preparation and transition to the new and challenging academic environment of college. The College Transition Advisor works with all stakeholders (students, parent, faculty, board members, administration) to develop students’ education and career plans to achieve a common outcome for the students in the school. The College Transition Advisor works to identify and secure college/university tuition funding sources such as grants and scholarships, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a Bachelors’ degree from an accredited institution.
  • Prior work experience in an urban school environment a plus; strong interpersonal, problem solving, communication, oral and written communications skills; ability to work with a team and react to change productively; demonstrated ability to design and coordinate activities, programs and large events.
  • Ability to work with all stakeholders (students, parent, faculty, board members, administration); demonstrated experience in preparing students for college transition and working with community organizations; familiarity with using administrative software systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Prior experience/training in locating securing college/university tuition funding sources (grants/scholarships) required.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and someone who will enjoy designing a program; a deep-seated belief that the achievement gap can be closed, and that at-promise student can successfully attend college.
  • A creative mind and someone who values thinking outside the box and implementing fresh and new ideas; a collaborative spirit, someone who values democratic decision-making.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist student in developing and enhancing skills and habits needed for successful college learning. Monitor students’ academic progress and achievement while enrolled in high school.
  2. Assisting the development of students’ education and career plans to keenly target and enhance the students’ educational experience and occupational choices.
  3. Work one on one with students and in small groups to provide support on college transition issues, community/college life and to help students access and utilize non-academic resources.
  4. Coordinate college related activities with other staff personnel, business and industry and their community partners.
  5. Coordinate authentic and work-based learning experiences.
  6. Consult with teachers, parents, administrators, and board members about the college bound program and other school-related activities, procedures and plans.
  7. Collect, analyze, interpret and distribute appropriate data related to college planning and transitioning.
  8. Work collaboratively with families and community representative and utilize resources for referral purposes.
  9. Evaluate the programs progress and make recommendations for continuous improvements.
  10. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
