Salary Range: $56,100 - $86,700

Reports to: Inspector General 

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Position Summary:

The Special Investigator is responsible for performing a full range of investigative assignments including difficult, complex, multifaceted, sensitive, and confidential investigations.  He/she should possess knowledge and understanding of how to conduct investigations involving allegations of criminal and administrative matters, utilizing both traditional and sophisticated investigative techniques. Additionally, a familiarity with the criminal process, including drafting, processing, and service of warrant requests. 

Minimum Qualifications:¿

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university; preferably in criminal justice, law, or business administration. Master’s degree a plus. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of interviewing and document analysis.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills, including report writing (the interview will include a writing project).
  • At least 10-15 years of professional level fraud investigation and/or law enforcement required.
  • Licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is preferred.
  • Professional certification as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

Essential Functions:¿

  • Examine allegations of fraud, waste, abuse, corruption, and other irregularities or improprieties on the part of District employees, contractor personnel and vendors doing business with the District; in line with the Principles and Standards of the Association of Inspectors General. 
  • Proactively apply knowledge of current fraud schemes to develop an investigative plan as well as identify areas of risk for fraud, waste, and/or abuse in investigative matters.
  • Ensure investigations are handled with discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.  
  • Prepare clear, concise, and conclusive investigative reports; setting forth the allegation(s), evidence, findings, and recommendations; for review and approval by the Inspector General. 
  • Examine a wide variety of records and procedures to secure evidence and prepare statements for possible referral for internal discipline, and/or to law enforcement for criminal prosecution.
  • Maintain effective liaisons with law enforcement agencies as necessary and required.
  • Develop and maintain confidential materials in the OIG Case Management System (CMS).
  • Develop and prioritize a heavy case load; ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Attend networking meetings, as necessary.
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned by the Inspector General.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants
