Location: DPSCD Police Department

Salary: $ 18.66 - $24.30 per hourly

Reports to: Detective Sergeant

Bargaining Unit: Teamsters Local 214

In accordance with the Agreement between Teamsters Local 214 and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

Detectives are plain clothes investigators who gather evidence, investigate crimes and violations of all State and Federal Laws. They conduct interviews, examine records, observe suspects' activities, and execute search warrants. Detectives conduct interviews to obtain statements from complainants, witnesses, and suspects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of laws and Law Enforcement within the Detroit Public Schools Community District
  • Knowledge of how to deal with juvenile and adult offenders
  • Knowledge of DPSPD employee’s policy and procedures, rules, regulations, and directives
  • Knowledge of DPSCD Core Values
  • Knowledge of necessary interview skills and ability to grow as an Investigator
  • Must possess excellent communication skills and be tactful when dealing with others
  • Must be able to interpret and apply complex laws and testify in a Court of Law
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED Certificate and must possess an MCOLES Certification.
  • The candidate should have at least ten (10) years of law enforcement or any equivalent combination of related education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for a detective's position.
  • The job duties require an employee to be absent of any physical limitations that impair effective job performance. The job often requires an employee to work under stressful conditions.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to coordinate cases, plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion
  2. Ability to maintain case files, prepare reports, and compose correspondence relative to Investigations
  3. Ensures the promptness and accuracy of submitted Investigations
  4. Ability to testify in court as an expert witness
  5. Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely
  6. Ability to work with other Law Enforcement Agencies
  7. Ability to conduct criminal investigations ranging from crimes against the person(s) and property to sex crimes, burglary, threats, or homicide and the ability to make an arrest when necessary
  8. Must be available to be On-Call at least once or twice a month
  9. Must be able to work alone or in a group
  10. Must be able to plan and organize workload effectively and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines
  11. Must be able to tag evidence and other property properly
  12. Must be able to provide all details of assigned Investigations to Supervisor
  13. Must record and maintain all files for various suspects and provide an update to supervisors promptly
  14. Maintain communication with the victim(s) and keep a current file with address, phone, and place of employment
  15. Must be able to analyze and maintain a record of all evidence and maintain files on all investigations to be presented in court
  16. And other duties as assigned by Detective Sergeant or designee.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
