In accordance with the Agreement between the Organization of School Administrators and Supervisors (O.S.A.S.) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced:
The Dean of School Culture will create a strong achievement culture in the school aligned to the mission, vision and values of the Detroit Public Schools Community District; work closely with the Principal and staff to cultivate an inclusive school environment and employ efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, caring, and disciplined school culture
- Must possess and provide evidence of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- At least two (2) years’ experience working in a K-12 educational setting and/or directly with school-aged children.
- Must have three (3) years of successful supervisory work experience monitoring and managing student behavior and/or working explicitly to shape the culture and climate of an institution serving young people.
- Preferred experience coaching teachers in the areas of classroom management, trauma-informed education, and restorative practices.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills required.
- Strong computer experience (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Communicate effectively and collaborate successfully with other staff members, families and caregivers, community members.
- Develop and contribute to an environment and climate that is safe, welcoming, and supportive for all members of the campus community.
- Create and ensure a culture that supports students’ academic achievement and socioemotional well-being, understanding the relationship between the two.
- Create structures and supports that encourage personal growth while, at the same time, accepting and valuing a diversity of personal expression and needs.
- Lead Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) school-based initiative.
- Partner with families and community members to involve them as active participants in the school community.
- Lead the coordination and and implementation of a school-wide behavior management system with meaningful incentives and consequences.
- Counsel and support students who are struggling to adjust to the school community, including students whose struggles manifest as behavior challenges.
- Oversee and support the implementation of the school’s “healing rooms” as a dedicated space for supporting students through conflicts and crises.
- Work with families, students, and staff to build and implement individualized behavior intervention plans, with careful attention to trauma-informed practice and anti-racism.
- Support other staff in leveraging restorative circles and other practices as part of everyday life at the school, as well as to mediate conflicts.
- Facilitate staff trainings on student-teacher relationships, trauma-informed practice, anti-racist schooling practices, classroom management, partnering with families and caregivers, and school culture.
- Conduct regular school culture walkthroughs to monitor the school’s progress towards its climate and culture goals.
- Supervise school entry, breakfast, lunch dismissal, and transitions to ensure they are safe, efficient, and functional for all school community members.
- Partner with other school staff to ensure coherence of interventions across multiple dimensions (i.e., academic, behavior, attendance).
- Partner with P-20 Child and Family Support Services Coordinator when applicable.
- Model and demonstrate ethical and responsible leadership.
- Prepare status updates and reports to communicate work activities and progress with school team.
- Collaborate with other district offices and departments to improve outcomes for all students.
- Serve as a liaison between principal and Executive Director of School Climate and Culture.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
