In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

SER Metro is a new partnership with the District that provides a comprehensive service delivery system in the areas of literacy, education, employment, community development and economic opportunities for student’s aged 16 – 21. Teachers at the SER Metro locations will work with the SER Metro program and administrator.  

The Information Technology Teacher offers rigorous curriculum which is aligned with the Michigan Common Core guidelines while upholding the mission, vision and values of the Detroit Public School Community District.  The IT Teacher collaborates with families and staff members to ensure academic success of students.  The IT Teacher evaluates and monitors student progress throughout the school year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and valid Standard CTE Certification appropriate for the vocational content of the teaching assignment.
  • In the event that there is no successful candidate available who holds a valid Standard CTE Certification, candidates with at least a High School diploma and recent and relevant industry work experience will be considered. CTE: Recent and Relevant Experience Requirements can be found here.
  • Provide evidence of Computer Science, Industrial and Technology Education, Technology and Design, or Educational Technology knowledge and skills along with holding a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Specialist 2016, IT Fundamentals and Security+ Certification is a plus.
  • Two to three years’ experience in adult education and/or with at-risk youth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Bilingual language skills in English/Spanish and/or English Arabic is preferred.
  • Ability to effectively educate and manage students from varying backgrounds and socio-economic levels.
  • Experience in effectively handling conflict and possess Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct program participants in an interesting, clear and concise manner.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation to travel to various locations outside of the office.

Essential Functions

  1. Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior and academic achievement.
  2. Adheres to the three core components of all CTE Programs; Rigor, Relevance and Relationships.
  3. Adheres to the IT curriculum for Microsoft, Keyboarding, Cisco, Apple and loT (Internet of Things) etc. providing innovative lectures, projects and activities to prepare students for certifications.
  4. Develops techniques and trainings methods to increase learning outcomes for students.
  5. Determine student proficiency, report and track student progress that assists in preparing students for certification and their career in IT.
  6. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents and school personnel.
  7. Ensures all technology is updated and devices are in working order at all times.
  8. Maintains student attendance in PowerSchool with high standards by inputting daily.  Grading will be placed in PowerSchool as assignments are completed.  
  9. Follow procedures for safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential school records.
  10. Contacts student when absent by text, email and/or phone to improve retention outcomes.
  11. Provides ongoing communication with students regarding attendance, grades and other issues that may hinder program completion.
  12. Attend required meetings and trainings as required by DPSCD and SER YouthBuild Learning Academy.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
