In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary: 

The Teacher Consultant for Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) will make classroom visits, enter and track data for compliance, attend transition conferences, and perform academic evaluations as needed. The Teacher Consultant for ECSE provides information for Eligibility Recommendation/Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team meetings and Individualized Education Program plans¿(IEP). The candidate must by knowledgeable of programs and services offered by Detroit Public Schools Community District.  


  • Minimum of a master’s degree in Education or field related to special education 

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a ZS endorsement, or a ZA endorsement and a minimum of one special education endorsement 

  • MDE approval as a teacher consultant, or possess the credentials required to receive state approval 

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience; three (3) of which must be in a special education early childhood setting, or five (5) years successful employment in a related service support position

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills 

  • Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems 

Essential Functions: 

  1. Model and support mission, vision, core values and priorities of DPSCD. 

  1. Build and maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with all stakeholders including, but not limited to instructional staff, students, parents and families, district representatives and other agencies within the community. 

  1. Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of student specific plans and processes including but not limited to Individualized Education Plans/Individual Family Service Plans, Transition Plans, Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans, and Manifestation Determination Reviews. 

  1. Support instructional responsibilities of staff through the provision of professional development offerings, consultations, and coaching/modeling of the development, implementation and evaluation of instructional strategies and materials.

  1. Analyze student performance data within and across student populations, making recommendations for action steps at the teacher and departmental levels. 

  1. Actively participate in professional learning communities, sharing available and relevant resources with colleagues and staff. 

  1. Support evaluation teams with initial and reevaluation processes. 

  1. Participate in district, departmental, school level and parent meetings as required and deemed necessary. 

  1. Assist teachers with curricular needs, the selection of student assessment and progress monitoring tools, and the collection of relevant student data. 

  1. To support student placement and progress in the least restrictive environment, attend student meetings as deemed necessary, including but not limited to IEP team/Individual Family Service Plan meetings, Transition meetings, Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan meetings, Manifestation Determination Review meetings.

  1. Consult with classroom teachers, technology specialists, administrators, other school/central office staff, and families to assist students based on individual needs. 

  1. Conduct formal and informal student achievement assessments, interpreting and reporting on assessment results as part of the evaluation process, to determine special education eligibility and/or the provision of appropriate programs and services. 

  1. Maintain strict confidentiality as outlined in FERPA and HIPPA. 

  1. Locate and share resources relevant to individual, group and family needs to support the provision of FAPE in the least restrictive environment.  

  1. Be available, upon request, to building and central office administrators regarding support for instructional personnel.

  1. Make student referrals to other professional district staff, as appropriate. 

  1. Support initiatives to increase parental engagement.

  1. Complete and maintain all annual, periodic, and specifically requested reports, schedules and summaries, in a timely manner. 

  1. Transport materials and equipment to and from site locations.

  1. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee. 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type ofcriminal background check.
