Location: Division of Partnerships and Innovation – Office of School Health & Wellness 

Salary: $70,000.00 - $95,000.00 

Reports to: Chief Health Officer

Position Summary: 

The Assistant Director will be responsible for program management of the critical OSHW strategic initiatives will support turnaround efforts of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), provide partnership coordination support, support strategy development, implement financial/budget management and identify process improvement opportunities within the department. The Assistant Director will work under the Office of School Health and Wellness (OSHW) team led by the Chief Health Officer and customer interface with all levels of the organization, relevant external partners, students and families. This position requires ability to manage all project aspects including: Planning, strategy development, implementation, budget, schedule, deliverables and customer relationship/interface. 

Position Funding:  

This position is funded through Federal COVID Relief funding. The position will expire on June 30, 2023 and is not guaranteed to be funded beyond that date. Prior to the expiration of the funding, your employment with the District will be non-renewed unless you are offered a funded position for the following fiscal year.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management or related field 

  • Advanced degree in Public Health preferred 

  • Experience in K-12 education, organizational leadership, and internal/external partner engagement are preferred 

  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience working in K-12 or higher education, non-profit, other health related organizations 

  • Expertise in prioritizing workflows, managing resources, contract management/development and policy development;¿Detail oriented in coordinating activities; Experience working in interdisciplinary academic programs; and excellent written and oral communication skills 

  • Experience with strategy design and implementation, business process improvement, and implementing organizational transformations 

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment 

  • Health or Medical Industry/Sector experience required 

  • School Health experience preferred 

  • Strong financial analysis and departmental budgeting process experience 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite especially Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint and PowerPoint.  Experience with Excel, including the use of pivot tables, formulas and linked tables 

  • Ability to communicate through narrative, visual, and data analysis using PPT and Excel 

 

Essential Functions: 

  1. Serve as the point person accountable for ensuring that necessary action plans and deliverables are completed in a timely, cost effective, operationally effective manner 

  1. Take an ambiguous project or project request and identify stakeholders that need to be involved, develop a timeline, proactively research approvals needed prior to implementation, create an executive level proposal and drive the project to completion 

  1. Lead change by developing new insights into situations; questioning conventional approaches; encouraging new ideas and innovations; and designing and implementing new or innovative programs/processes 

  1. Manage the contracted nurse invoice tracking and budget VS actual tracking process, working alongside the Senior Director of Nursing, and assist in the preparation and monitor other expenditure of OSHW budget 

  1. Develop and maintain a strong and open line of communication with the Exceptional Student Education department, to ensure nursing services and key district planning milestones are aligned and occur in a timely fashion.   

  1. Inventory all service contracts within the OSHW and implement oversight process to manage these contracts through expiration, ensuring goals outlined within the agreement are met. 

  1. Provide thought leadership to sponsoring executives regarding emerging strategic health and process improvement opportunities, as well as ongoing operational issues and challenges 

  1. Research and implement district wide health needs assessment 

  1. Create and oversee OSHW calendar of events and initiatives 

  1. Work closely with Detroit Health Department to coordinate student health screenings (vision, hearing, etc) 

  1. Serve as OSHW liaison to Sex Education Advisory Board 

  1. Support implementation of Board approved Coordinated School Health Plan. 

  1. Serve as point of contact for Coordinated School Health Council – coordinate meetings, set agenda, etc 

  1. Manage and/or be responsible for designing research plans for data gathering and analysis, and implement information/data sharing between nursing team and local providers and health institutions 

  1. Ensure that OSHW policies and procedures remain current 

  1. Assure school district compliance with state laws and regulations (e.g., immunizations and health assessments) 

  1. Coordinate and support staff professional development specific to health 

  1. Respond to correspondence regarding OSHW programs and services 

  1. Work closely with OSHW partners to ensure they have the necessary support to implement programming and services;  

  1. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Health Officer (or Designee) 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
