Location: Fisher Building

Salary: $95,000 - $130,000

Reports to: Executive Director, Instructional Equity

Bargaining Unit: Non-Union Administrator

Position Summary:

As a significant member of the District’s Instructional Equity Department, the Deputy Executive Director (DED) works with the Executive Director (ED) of Instructional Equity to provide leadership and direction to the Early Learning and Montessori Team. The DED will establish a common vision for excellent instruction in Early Learning and Montessori programs and lead and implement a coherent, focused academic strategy for achieving the vision, including curriculum and assessment, school support, and educator professional development. The DED will support the ED with the development, implementation, and evaluation of Early Learning and Montessori programs, as well as the development of the Early Learning and Montessori budget and contracts to ensure the strategy is fully resourced. As a senior leader in the organization, the Deputy EED is accountable for building and leading an inclusive team that produces results for students participating in Early Learning and Montessori programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid State of Michigan Administration Certificate and Teaching Certificate in related content area highly preferred
  • At least 5 years of effective K-12 classroom teaching experience
  • At least 3 years of building or district-level leadership experience

Essential Functions:

  1. Vision: Partner with stakeholders to enact the District’s vision for excellent instruction in early learning and Montessori settings; invest others in the importance of expanded access to Early Learning and Montessori programs to achieve the District’s mission
  2. Strategy: Support the development of clear, specific, and ambitious student participation and achievement targets for Early Learning and Montessori programs; with the support of the ED of Instructional Equity, establish a strategy to achieve targets in each area of responsibility, holding parties accountable for meeting targets and adjusting strategy and approach to achieve desired outcomes
  3. Assessment: Organize and facilitate the adoption and implementation of appropriate assessment systems for student, staff, and school performance aligned to each area of responsibility
  4. Curriculum: Organize and facilitate the selection and implementation of high-quality instructional materials and implementation resources related to Early Learning and Montessori programs; work in partnership with colleagues across the Office of Strategy & Academics and Schools to ensure coherence in the student experience  
  5. School Support: Partner with content area leaders and partners to implement an outcomes-oriented school support model; ensure system of supports systematically address school needs for Early Learning and Montessori and result in improved outcomes
  6. Professional Development: Organize and facilitate the design and delivery of professional development for Early Learning and Montessori programming; work with senior leaders across the Office of Strategy & Academics and schools to ensure coherence and focus in the PD program; gather and use quantitative and qualitative school, educator, and student achievement data to inform the PD model, content, and delivery methods, ensuring that Montessori educators have pathways to pursue Montessori educator certifications
  7. Stakeholder Engagement: Proactively engage Early Learning and Montessori constituents, including families, community members, community groups, alumni, and educators to understand motivations and needs, problem solve through challenging issues, and arrive at productive solutions
  8. Budget, Contracts and Partnerships: Support the ED of Instructional Equity to propose line item budgets aligned to strategy; tightly monitor budget and contracts throughout the year to ensure responsible stewardship of resources; support the development of board agenda items related to Early Learning and Montessori; implement partnerships that advance the academic strategy and support student achievement; hold vendors and partners accountable for results
  9. Compliance and Reporting: Ensure district compliance with all state and federal requirements within area of responsibility
  10. Team Management: Lead a diverse team to great results, creating an inclusive culture where all team members can thrive; develop equitable processes and policies and build strong relationships across lines of identity and power; use performance management and strong managerial competencies to ensure staff throughout the organizational structure champion our culture, contribute meaningful work, motivate others to achieve results, and operate as constant learners
  11. Anti-Racism Commitment: Demonstrate a commitment to antiracism, center racial equity and inclusion, and bring practical solutions to issues of equity and inclusion in schools and on the team
  12. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Instructional Equity

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants
