Location: Office of Human Resources - 3011 W. Grand Blvd Detroit, MI 48202          

Salary Details: $110,000 - $155,000

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources

Position Summary:

The Executive Director of Virtual Learning will be responsible for leading the implementation of the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Virtual School.  The Executive Director of Virtual Learning will supervise the general operation of the online school, including providing oversight of the school leader and evaluating the school’s progress. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the Virtual School are successful and that the school’s operations (programming, scheduling, enrollment, staffing, operations) are in alignment with DPSCD’s strategic plan, as well as local and state policies. The Executive Director will collaborate regularly with senior leaders in the Office of Schools, Strategy, Curriculum and Instruction, Technology, Finance, and Operations.

Position Funding:

This position is funded through Federal COVID Relief funding. The position will expire on June 30, 2023 and is not guaranteed to be funded beyond that date. Prior to the expiration of the funding, your employment with the District will be non-renewed unless you are offered a funded position for the following fiscal year.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; master’s degree preferred
  • Possess a valid administrative certification in state of Michigan
  • Minimum of at least 5 years professional experience including experience in a senior-level position managing staff and administrative leadership at the school-building
  • Demonstrated experience leading virtual learning in a K-12 setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Michigan-specific pupil accounting requirements for operating a virtual school

Essential Functions:

  1. Establish and clearly articulate a vision for the DPSCD virtual school including how it will successfully meet District goals for student success and what the school’s leadership team must do in order to achieve that vision.
  2. Establish clear systems and processes that promotes continuous improvement at the school.
  3. Work with district and building administrators to establish and implement the School and District Improvement Plan.
  4. Ensure the District Virtual School and its leader makes effective use of online tools for learning including Microsoft Teams, Schoology, Edgenuity, and other relevant applications.
  5. Maintain current knowledge with all Michigan policy and guidelines for the operation of a Virtual School.
  6. Collaborate with senior leaders in key central office departments to ensure the DPSCD Virtual School’s day-to-day operations are supported and executed in alignment with District and state requirements for budgeting, pupil accounting, enrollment, instruction, and necessary reporting. Assist the school administrators with communication and collaboration with other District leaders, as necessary.
  7. Provide oversight of the recruitment and staffing for all positions allocated to the DPSCD Virtual School and provide leadership when staffing changes (hire, dismissal, transfer) must be made.
  8. Assist the DPSCD Virtual School Principal and Leadership Team in the planning and execution of professional learning for staff at the school. 
  9. Engage the community and families to proactively address needs and concerns; where necessary, investigate issues and ensure a resolution is reached.
  10. Assist with the hiring, development, onboarding, evaluation and development the DPSCD Virtual School leader, and other school Principals, as needed.
  11. Ensure staff are accountable for upholding the DPSCD Core Values and complying with all District policies and procedures, particularly guidance around accounting for attendance, two-way communication between students and teachers, and COVID safety protocols when in-person.
  12. Provide leadership in the development, writing, and implementation of virtual learning procedures for the DPSCD Virtual School.
  13. Work with the DPSCD Virtual School leaders to collect, analyze and report out on key metrics to the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, the Deputy Superintendent of Schools and the Superintendent.
  14. Attend meeting of K-12 principals, Office of Human Resources, Division of Schools, District Leadership Team, and any other as delegated by the Assistant Superintendent.
  15. Serve as the DPSCD Virtual School leader in the event the Principal or his/her designee is unable to do so.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
