Salary: $ 69,909.00 - $88,803.00 

Reports to: Executive Director, Business Office

Bargaining Unit: OSAS

In accordance with the agreement between the Organization of School Administrators (O.S.A.S.) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, Article 6.4, Promotion Procedure, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

The Principal Accountant, General Ledger and Financial Reporting will work with the Accounting, Budget and Cash Management team and other DPSCD stakeholders to prepare financial reports, accounting entries to ensure the proper accounting is reflected in the district general ledger that annual and analysis and reconciliations to ensure the responsible stewardship of district funds, aligned with district priorities and organized around the needs of schools in a manner that promotes the academic and social/emotional growth of DPSCD students.

Minimum Qualification: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited college or university required; coursework should reflect systematic study in at least two of the following: Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics or Information Technology
  • Minimum of 4 years of work experience in a computerized accounting environment.
  • Experience in a public education setting a plus. 

Essentional Function: 

  1. Prepare external and internal financial reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis as required.
  2. Monthly, quarterly or annual reports required by the Michigan Department of Treasury due to any short term or long-term loans.
  3. Analyze and review financial data in PeopleSoft on an as needed basis.
  4. Provide assistance to schools and central office divisions with their monthly reports as required.
  5. Maintain communications and rapport with staff in schools and the central office as well as external contacts.
  6. Revise and update policies and procedures as relates to Financial Reporting.
  7. Submit the annual financial data for the District electronically to the Financial Information Database (FID) to Michigan Department of Education.
  8. Maintain District records per the Records Retention and Disposal Schedule for Michigan Public Schools
  9. Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual tax filings as required
  10. Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries as required, including uploads in the financial system
  11. Prepare monthly reconciliations of banks accounts as required
  12. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, work closely with the auditors and the staff in providing the required documentation related to the District audits.
  13. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
