Position Title: Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Trainable Aide (Emotional Impairment)

Location: Various Schools        

Salary: $12.53 - $14.41/hr.

Reports to: Principal/Designee

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

In accordance with the Agreement between the AFSCME Michigan Council 25-Local 345 and the Detroit Public Schools Community District, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Principal or designee, the exceptional student education trainable aide provides in-classroom assistance to both emotionally impaired students and the teacher to help facilitate and provide a calm atmosphere to the learning environment. The Exceptional Student Education Trainable aide for student plays a key role with helping emotionally impaired students accomplish daily tasks necessary to access and participate within their learning environment by helping them through their behavioral needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of an Associate Degree.
  • Official college transcript with at least 60 credit hours, or a completed Educational Testing Services/Para pro Assessment with results.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Prevention (CPI) certified preferred.  Yearly training will be provided.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist with behavior support by getting to know each student, recognizing their antecedent, provide calming techniques to prevent outbreak.
  2. Assist with the implementation of the Positive Behavioral Support System (PBIS) along with check-in and check-out implementation.
  3. Assist with data collection: behavior documentation, upkeeping student data binders, progress monitoring.
  4. Collaborate with instructional, support, and administrative staff such as the behavior specialists and social workers to plan appropriate behavior management strategies/tools.
  5. Escort students to support service rooms (i.e., nurse, speech, school social worker), monitor students to/from lavatory, and supervise students during lunch period, mainstream activities or change in classes.
  6. Care for student’s physical needs which includes; washing, lifting, feeding, taking to toilet, diapering and changing clothes, as required by student’s physical condition.
  7. Monitoring students at the end of the day while they await their transportation.
  8. Participate in staff development activities.

Implement the activities as directed by the instructional staff.

  1. Assist in maintaining a neat and clean area for any and all classroom and lunch activities. When necessary, sanitize by using universal health care procedures.
  2. Assist with the preparation and implementation of classroom activities and/or individual and small group instruction, preparation of instructional materials, bulletin boards, etc. under the direction/supervision of the instructional staff.
  3. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Administrator or designee.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
