 In accordance with the Agreement between the Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Detroit Public Schools Community District, the following vacancy is announced:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess and provide evidence of a minimum of a master’s degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
  • Candidates must possess and provide evidence of a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a School Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Counselor License issued by the State of Michigan Department of Education.
  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 18 semester hours of graduate course work in an Accredited School Counseling Program (documentation must be submitted at time of application).  
  • Completion of a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) mandated clock hour internship with school-aged pupils under the supervision of a person who is a counselor educator in an approved school counseling program. At least half of the mandated clock hours shall be in a school setting

 Essential Functions

  1. Administer Pre/Post Needs Assessments to students, parents and staff
  2. Provide professional guidance and counseling services that assist in creating a learning environment that contributes directly to student mastery.
  3. Concentrate on the academic achievement, career development, personal-social effectiveness and psychological maturity of students while facilitating professional tasks.
  4. Participate on Resource Coordinating Teams with support services personnel. (RCT).
  5. Counsel students individually and in small groups on a regularly scheduled basis.
  6. Assist students with the understanding of the MI Six Career Pathways and the completion of the Education Development Plan (EDP).
  7. Provide students with career guidance experiences in school wide orientations, large groups, small groups and classroom settings.
  8. Coordinate guidance activities with other school staff personnel, business/labor industry, community foundations/organizations and other local resources.
  9. Consult with teachers, parents, administrators, and others about the School Counseling Program and other educational-related activities, procedures and plans.
  10. Participate in data aggregation and interpretation with students, parents, staff and counselor colleagues.
  11. Participate in webinars, site training programs, professional conferences/workshops and other professional growth experiences.
  12. Serve on the School Improvement Team and participate in other staff development activities.
  13. Evaluate guidance program progress; and
  14. Fulfill other school counseling duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal (or Designee).


Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
