Salary Details: $140,000 - $195,000

Reports to: Superintendent

Position Summary:

The Chief Public Affairs Officer is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive strategy to leverage marketing, government relations, internal communications, and broad community engagement to fulfill the mission and vision of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). The Chief Public Affairs Officer directs the day to day marketing and government relations activities through full time and contracted staff. The Chief Public Affairs Officer is responsible for monitoring the pulse of the community as it relates to their perceptions of DPSCD and working proactively to ensure critical information, initiatives, and programs are understood by stakeholders.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5-8 years or professional experience including at least 3 years leading teams in a senior role focused on government affairs, public affairs, and/or marketing/communications  
  • Track record of success leading large, complex initiatives requiring regular, ongoing stakeholder engagement and regular collection and monitoring of key data
  • Exceptional written, interpersonal and public presentation skills and a track record of working well under pressure

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy that coordinates marketing, engagement and lobbying efforts to ensure the District’s mission, vision and strategic goals are understood, internalized and championed.
  2. Establish and track progress against clear, specific, and ambitious targets to inform how well the District’s message is understood, received and advocated for in the local, state and national community.
  3. Design and mount strategic legislative campaigns; build advocacy for the District’s broader legislative agenda.
  4. Monitor legislative developments and direct resources to influence policy development to align with District’ priorities.
  5. Lead the development of strategies, campaigns and materials to support broad external stakeholder engagement, outreach and communication.
  6. Liaise with senior leaders to ensure the public is aware of signature initiatives and key programs.
  7. Lead the selection, management and evaluation of external marketing, communications or government relations vendors.
  8. Coordinate with the Assistant Superintendent of Communications to align messages for media outlets.
  9. As needed, act as the voice of the District by crafting key messages and preparing and/or delivering presentations.
  10. Lead, develop and evaluate staff members to ensure their professional growth and success. 
  11. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key constituents.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants
