In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

The Music Therapist is responsible for providing comprehensive Music Therapy services for students with severe emotional impairments in grades K-8 who are currently placed in a day treatment setting. The Music Therapist functions as a member of the educational and therapeutic teams. The Music Therapist adheres to the American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board of Music Therapists Code of Ethics.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
  • Valid certification from the Board of Music Therapists.
  • One year of school system music therapy (or practicum) experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Knowledge of best practice Instructional strategies
  • Strong organizational skill.
  • Classroom management skills

Essential Functions:

  1. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and community members.
  2. Written and oral communication with teachers, parents, and community members.
  3. Plan and organizes music therapeutic activities in accordance with students’ needs, capabilities, and interest.
  4. Design music therapy curriculum and lessons as per the individual needs of the student(s).
  5. Plan, organize and implement music therapeutic instructional strategies.
  6. Implement and utilize excellent organizational skills when planning programs.
  7. Assist students during academic and adjustment problems by taking restorative measures to enhance student learning abilities.
  8. Participate in instrumental and vocal activities designed to meet students’ needs such as solo or group singing, rhythmic activities or playing in bands.
  9. Instruct students on proper use of equipment, materials, and textbooks.
  10. Take proactive measures to enhance student-learning abilities.
  11. Monitor, evaluate and assess student’s progress on a periodic basis.
  12. Instruct, implement, revisit rules of conduct to ensure classroom and campus discipline strategies.
  13. Maintain inventory of instructional materials, equipment and textbooks.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by administrator/supervisor.  

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
