In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

District ASD K-12 Coaches are part of the Wayne RESA ASD Support Framework designed to build capacity for educating students with autism in their least restrictive environment (LRE) through a collaborative coaching model.  This capacity building, proactive approach supports students with autism across the LRE continuum.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) or fully certified School Social Worker / Speech Pathologist / School Psychologist / Occupational Therapist with extensive ASD experience required.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Work closely with assigned district(s) with the goal of improving outcomes for students with autism by building capacity and implementing evidence-based practices across the entire LRE continuum.
  2. Support staff working with students in grades K-12 in general education classrooms with/without independence paraprofessionals (IPs), special education non-ACT 18 classrooms and special education ACT18 center classrooms.
  3. Participate in district level ASD student planning/support/PBIS/IP teams, as appropriate.
  4. Support evaluation and IEP teams with ASD eligibility, LRE determinations, and other programming decisions.
  5. Provide support, guidance and professional development to district staff and administration regarding ASD eligibility, best practices, universal supports and learning resources including the appropriate use of visual, communication, academic, behavioral, and environmental accommodations or modifications.
  6. Provide guidance and support to assigned districts regarding referrals of students, into, and transition out of, ASD center classrooms and programs.
  7. Provide guidance and support to ASD center programs regarding the implementation of ACT 18 entrance and exit criteria and procedures.
  8. Support implementation of the essential components of an instructional program for students with ASD to include predictability and structure, functional analysis of behaviors, development of behavior intervention plans and systematic data monitoring.
  9. Provide guidance and implementation strategies for utilizing IP support.
  10. Support the development and implementation of Peer-to-Peer programs at all grade levels and across the LRE continuum.
  11. Support the implementation of PBIS, including the development and implementation of classroom management plans, FBAs and BIPs.
  12. Provide guidance and informational resource to parents and/or guardians.
  13. Actively participate as a member of the Wayne County ASD Support Team and Wayne Regional Autism Collaborative for Excellence (WRACE) team.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.

Internal Applicants
