Position Title: Data Engineer

Location: Data Assessment and Accountability

Salary: $85,000 - $110,000

Reports to: Deputy Executive Director of Data Services

Position Summary:

As a member of the Data Services department, the Data Engineer will develop and maintain pipelines for the data of our District representing over 50,000 students. The Data Engineer will collaborate closely with the data architect, BI developer, and analysts, managing scalable data integrations and developing an analytical infrastructure that will support various applications, including business intelligence tools, software applications, and analysis to produce meaningful insights. This is a unique opportunity to join a growing team that is quickly increasing its capacity to build long-term data infrastructure using a modern technology stack.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, and/or equivalent experience
  • More than 3 years’ experience transforming raw data into useful data systems/platforms
  • Experience building and operating distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets from multiple sources
  • Expert command of SQL with experience building database tables
  • Expert command of Python or similar analytical programming languages
  • Experience compiling and maintaining technical documentation
  • Experience communicating business requirements and project plans with internal clients
  • Experience working in an urban public-school district a plus
  • Experience optimizing queries and utilization of server resources for performance and efficiency
  • Experience ingesting and combining raw and unstructured data of various types
  • Have Microsoft Azure Data Engineer certification or be willing to enroll through the District

Essential Functions:

  1. Contribute to the development of a modern data infrastructure that drives decision-making at all levels of the organization.
  2. Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and build out new integrations to support the increasing data volume and complexity.
  3. Extract, transform, and load data from raw unstructured data to consumable structured data using SSIS.
  4. Collaborate with analysts, data architect, and BI developer to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility and fostering data-driven decision making across the organization.
  5. Implement processes and systems to monitor data quality, ensuring production data is always accurate and available for key stakeholders and business processes that depend on it.
  6. Write and curate documentation internally and externally around business rules for metrics.
  7. Collaborate with other members of the Data Services team around a long-term data strategy plan that scales for the district’s decision-making and analytics.
  8. Develop project plans and engage in the project timeline estimation process.
  9. Perform ad hoc data investigation and analysis duties as assigned by manager.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director of Data Services.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
