Position Title: Business Intelligence Developer

Location: Data Assessment and Accountability

Salary: $70,000 - $95,000

Reports to: Deputy Executive Director of Data Services

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Position Summary:

As a member of the Data Services team, the Business Intelligence Developer will design top-tier analytical solutions for our school district representing over 50,000 students, that will be used by thousands of users. The district currently leverages a technology stack of SQL and Power BI to report on multi-domain data and support strategic decision-making. The BI developer will collaborate closely with a data architect and data analysts to direct, design, and produce beautiful dashboards as the visualization expert for the district.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical area, and/or technical/equivalent experience.


  • More than two (2) years’ experience working in business intelligence and data visualization
  • Demonstrated expertise and fluency designing reports in a BI platform (such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, Looker, Sisense)
  • Experience working in SQL with large datasets (with millions of rows)
  • A grasp of the principles surrounding the visual display of quantitative information


  • Relevant BI certifications
  • Familiarity with Power BI, DAX expressions, Power Query, and transforming data with SQL
  • Experience working in an urban public-school district
  • Experience defining business requirements and communicating with stakeholders
  • Experience with data modeling and transformations, such as in SSAS

Essential Functions

  1. Participate in the full development lifecycle of BI solutions, including planning, designing, developing, testing and deploying.
  2. Engage stakeholders, documenting business requirements and producing wireframes prior to development.
  3. Produce accurate and thoughtful displays of data that communicate metrics and KPIs.
  4. Query and manipulate data using SQL within Power BI and other enterprise BI tools to achieve scalable reports and visualizations.
  5. Create efficient data models that scale and promote reusability.
  6. Champion the principles and best practices of data visualization within the district, and stay current with the latest BI technologies.
  7. Engage in design-oriented focus groups with local stakeholders (e.g., principals, teachers, support staff, administrators, district teams).
  8. Develop and maintain technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders on business rules and metric calculations.
  9. Participate as a key voice within the Data Services department, which oversees long-term data strategy for the organization.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned by manager.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance.
