Salary: $85,000 - $110,000

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent, Office of Family and Community Engagement

Bargaining Unit: N/A

Position Summary: The Senior Director of Parent Academy leads and oversees the District’s Parent Academy programming, development, recruitment, marketing, and evaluation. The Senior Director establishes and leads a catalogue of offerings for parents and families while growing internal and external relationships that provide parents a wide array of diverse, workshops, seminars and experiences. The Senior Director reviews and shares data and ensures parent input is part of the program design process. He or she manages the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) website and other social media engagement in alignment with the District’s broad communication efforts. The Senior Director assists with regular community outreach to educate and promote parent involvement in the District via face-to-face, door to door and virtual engagement including leading and supporting canvassing activities, as needed by the district, during regular work hours as well as evenings and weekends. This position requires the ability to periodically work an extended and/or flexible schedule to meet the needs of families, which includes evenings and weekends.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, coursework.  or professional development in team building, customer service, planning and development, building collaboratives, school community relations and family/children engagement preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in an administrative position focused on parent and family engagement,
  • Demonstrated experience implementing best-practice engagement models in K-12 settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in adult learning theory, development and planning/execution of training and workshops.
  • Familiarity with employability skills development,
  • Demonstrated experience working with school leaders to effectively establish innovative programs and services
  • Ability to work night and weekend hours
  • Ability to support canvassing activities, as needed by the district, during regular work hours as well as evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions:

  1. Lead the development and assume regular management of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Parent Academy
  2. Supervise, evaluate and develop staff members assigned to support Parent Academy
  3. Lead the engagement of internal and external partners to develop a rich array of trainings and workshops focused in three areas: Parenting and Advocacy; Student Achievement; and Personal and Individual Growth
  4. Conduct in-person, door-to-door canvassing to engage with parents as required, including during evenings and weekends
  5. Perform duties outside of regular business hours to meet the needs of parents and families
  6. Plan and facilitate monthly meetings with partners to serve as an advisory group over the work
  7. Research and share best practices and other successful models related to implementing Parent Academy
  8. Work with partners to clearly define the scope of their services and outcomes for Parent Academy coursework
  9. Collaborate with Family and Community Engagement staff to use parent data to shape and prioritize course offerings
  10. Organize the cadence of programming including course catalogs, semesters, and supporting tools for parents to easily engage
  11. Support the Family and Community Engagement team in ensuring a broad platform of services are available to families
  12. Oversee the engagement of parents in the planning and implementation of Parent Academy
  13. Lead the development of an awards and recognition system for parents and other participants
  14. Create, facilitate and manage a “train the trainers” program which leads to parents successfully completing courses to become successful co-trainers
  15. Assist with the creation and use of data collection tools (including surveys) to measure satisfaction and impact
  16. Organize the reporting of data related to participant satisfaction and program impact
  17. Establish relationships with employment agencies to create pathways for parents to employment opportunities inside and outside the district
  18. Collaborate with the marketing and communication teams to ensure parents are aware and can easily access opportunities
  19. Organize parent and family recognition ceremonies
  20. Collaborate with the marking and communication teams to document and share success stories
  21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent, or designee

Security Clearance

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department.
