In accordance with the Agreement between the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary 

The School at Marygrove is a new, one-of-a-kind K-12 institution serving students in the city of Detroit. It is a special collaboration between Detroit Public School Community District and the University of Michigan, housed at the historic Marygrove College Campus. The high school program, entering its third year in 2021-22, is particularly designed to introduce students to the scope, rigor, and discipline of design thinking and engineering, and to explore how these and other academic disciplines can be leveraged to solve authentic, complex social problems and to advance justice in Detroit and beyond.

The school is also home to the Teaching School at Marygrove—a unique residency partnership between DPSCD and the University of Michigan to train and support aspiring and early career teachers. Teachers at the school will host aspiring teachers (pre-service interns) as they pursue their teacher certification.

We are looking for successful and innovative teachers that are interested in joining the team of this special school. Applicants must be ready to think creatively about teaching and learning, work hard to support students to solve complex problems and to advance social justice, and care deeply about all students, their families and communities, and the city of Detroit. 

Qualifications 

Education: 

• Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited. Successful candidates who possess degrees beyond a bachelor’s degree will be eligible for the appropriate salary differential. 
• Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA) with a Intergrated Science or Math (DI, DX or EX) endorsement. 

Application Process: 

1. Candidates who meet the education and certification requirements will join the eligibility pool and their resumes will be shared with the school leadership team.
2. Selected candidates from the pool will be invited to attend an interview by the school leadership team.
3. Candidates who successfully pass the interview process with the school leadership team maybe be invited to submit either a pre-recorded lesson or share an in session virtual learning lesson.

• Familiarity with and/or or eagerness to learn about project-based and place-based learning.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
• Ability to motivate a group of students through creative, hands-on, authentic pedagogies.
• Familiarity with and/or eagerness to learn about restorative approaches to classroom management and trauma-informed practice.

 Essential Functions 

1. Communicate effectively and collaborate successfully with other staff members, families and caregivers, and community members. 
2. Offer rigorous, engaging curriculum aligning with State of Michigan science and engineering standards and guidelines, and provide creative and varied means of assessment for students. Design and/or implement curriculum (in alignment with the school’s mission, vision and District programming) based on the needs of students
3. Develop and contribute to an environment and climate that is safe, welcoming, and supportive for all members of the campus community. 
4. Offer input and assist grade level, subject matter, IEP, and leader led conferences and meetings. 
5. Ensure families and other community members are meaningfully integrated into school life and curriculum.
6. Support the development of novice teachers and the advancement of the teaching profession by hosting and mentoring pre-service teachers.
7. Grow professionally by engaging and leading professional development programs. . 
8. Communicate proactively and sensitively with parents and caregivers about student progress and academic achievements. 
9. Counsel and support students during academic and adjustment problems. 
10. Collect and maintain accurate attendance, progress reports, and grade records. 
11. Evaluate, assess, and monitor student progress on a periodic basis. Adjust instruction based on these evaluations, and provide individualized support to students as needed. 
12. Instruct students on proper use of equipment and materials.
13. Maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment.
14. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
