Salary: $110,000 - $155,000

Reports to: Chief of Staff, Office of the Superintendent

Position Summary:

The Executive Director of Public Affairs (ED-PA) will help to implement the District’s community engagement strategy with respect to the local Detroit community. The ED-PA will work with the Chief of Staff’s Government & Community Affairs and Enrollment teams to develop and execute a plan to proactively engage with the local community. The ED-PA serves as the lead voice of community engagement in the District’s outreach. The ED-PA will be a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, and may be assigned special projects at the direction of the Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a Bachelor’s degree (or higher).

Experience

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in stakeholder engagement or government relations outreach work (possibly in corporate, government, agency or relevant NGO/association environments).
  • Experience using broad communication strategies to influence community leaders. Has developed skill – in either a corporate, trade, consulting or campaign setting – blending communication, community engagement strategies into effective, integrated plans to influence desired outcomes with external stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of providing strategic counsel to senior leadership particularly with regards to stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience implementing community engagement plans and strategies to keep internal stakeholders engaged in external work.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ability to convey complex policy issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Good working knowledge of Office 365 applications

Essential Functions:

  1. Responsible for local engagement to nurture relationships and enhance trust and pride in the District’s reputation;
  2. Help to Inform the community about the district's Strategic Plan and reform efforts;
  3. Serve as a trusted advisor, thought partner, and capacity builder for internal stakeholders;
  4. Serve as the primary contact for local community and neighborhood organizations;
  5. Implement the District’s community engagement strategy for faith-based, community and neighborhood organizations;
  6. Attend community functions to gain access to and strengthen relationships with neighborhood organizations, faith leaders and community organizations, including responding to community members concerns while protecting the District’s interest;
  7. Strategize and organize community engagement townhalls as needed including location selection, target audience, key messages;
  8. Implement strategy for neighborhood engagement by City Council District
  9. Maintain database of community organizations, block clubs, non-profit organizations and precinct delegates, including data about membership population, age demographics and civic engagement rates, such as voter turnout rates;
  10. Establish and nurture relationships with the local community organizations;
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
