In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Detroit Public Schools Community District, the following vacancy is announced:

Position Summary: The school nurse is a member of the total educational team with a primary focus on health promotion and disease prevention, who instructs and directs children and staff to promote the mental and physical health of students so that they may participate in and benefit from the educational program. To accomplish this task, the nurse will perform or supervise the performance of nursing services as established by the National Association of School Nurses and in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a Registered Nurse with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing or other health-related field from an accredited college or university. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Candidate must have and maintain first-aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certifications; be computer literate and competent in the use of existing technology.
  • Candidate must have a minimum of one year prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent and community or mental health.

Essential Functions

  1. Ensures that the health needs of general education and special education students are addressed during the school day and communicated to parents/guardians in a timely manner.
  2. Maintains documentation log of students assessed, evaluated and treated during the school day.
  3. Manages communicable diseases, ensures follow up and provides documentation to the local health department.
  4. Monitors and assists with immunization compliance in accordance to State of Michigan requirements in assigned schools.
  5. Provides training, oversight and monitoring of delegated nursing tasks.
  6. Develops and implements health care plans and other required health care documentation forms.
  7. Serves as liaison between teachers, administrators, parents, and community health care providers. 
  8. Provides for the care of acute, chronic and emergent health needs of students.
  9. Conducts health assessments, including all required evaluations for students with suspected disabilities.
  10. Provides training, oversight and monitors competency of medication administration in schools.
  11. Plan, develop and coordinates health presentations for professional development upon request.
  12. Prepares and submits appropriate reports and written summaries as requested, including all required documentation for Medicaid reimbursement. 
  13. Participates in IEP, 504, RCT, REED and any other meeting as requested for students with health conditions.
  14. Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  15. Authorize Personal Care Forms as appropriate for students on their caseloads or otherwise known to nurse.
  16. All other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Nursing or designee.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
