In accordance with the Agreement between the Detroit Federation of Paraprofessionals, and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

 

Position Summary:

Food Service Specialist monitors menu items that are prepared for students’ lunch. Food Service Specialist assist with preparation of menu items served to the students. They also communicate with assigned Area Manager which include menu items, student changes of dietary needs and departmental issues.  As with all Office of School Nutrition staff, Food Service Specialist will provide professional services to students and staff. Food Service Specialist are responsible for maintaining and cleaning the kitchen area and food preparation areas at assigned location.  Works to provide nutritional meals while following the federal and state guidelines for sanitary conditions as outlined by ServSafe training.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Provide evidence of a valid ServSafe Certification
  • Must be 18 years of age

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to work with others, excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  2. Coordinate each meal preparation and counter service.
  3. Ensure that safe food handling techniques and methods are maintained during the food preparation and service.
  4. Coordinate and perform electronic point of sales duties for all meal periods.
  5. Assuming responsibility for food preparation, food production and recording food usage in compliance with Office of School Nutrition procedures and USDA requirements.
  6. Responsible for the general sanitation and maintenance of a clean and safe food production area by assigning duties to others assigned to the workplace.
  7. Assist in the general cleaning of the food service area(s) which includes sweeping, mopping and removing trash as needed.
  8. Enforce cleanliness and sanitation in the food service operation in compliance with local health and sanitation laws.
  9. Maintain inventory of kitchen supplies, products, and equipment.
  10. Order inventory, receiving and storing food and nonfood items on a scheduled and as needed basis.
  11. Complete records which pertain to accountability for physical and human resources.
  12. Assist in the annual food safety training of new hires and current employees.
  13. Ability to maintain professionalism and keep confidential all matters handled by the office.
  14. Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
