Salary: $19.14 - $30.26 (Hourly)

Reports to: Lieutenant, Patrol

Bargaining Unit: OSAS

In accordance with the Agreement between Organization of School Administrators (OSAS) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

The Program Associate II – Non-Exempt (Police Sergeant) is responsible for a multitude of responsibilities including supervising Police Officers, enforcement of local, state, and federal laws, Detroit Public Schools Community District property and equipment. Supervises investigation and documentation of crimes and incidents. The Police Sargent provides documents and presents evidence as well as provides legal testimony.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure State of Michigan Certified Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in completing accident and criminal investigations.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to lead and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to perform inspections and/or approve installations.

Essential Functions:

  1. Supervises police officers in performance of regularly assigned patrols and incident investigations; prepares shift notices and assignments; conducts pre-hire evaluations of prospective police officer candidates; conducts performance evaluations; makes recommendations in matters concerning employee discipline and retention.
  2. Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, and traffic laws including Detroit Public Schools Community District policies.
  3. Assists executives in establishing procedures; makes recommendations regarding improvements or changes in department operations.
  4. Provides public assistance for Detroit Public Schools Community District students and staff.
  5. Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment, issues and accounts for police equipment.
  6. Represents the department at community and business meetings.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  8. Successfully liaison and maintain relationships outside law enforcement agencies, the Wayne County Prosecutors Office, community partners and entities within the Detroit Public Schools Community District through crime and intelligence briefings.
  9. Lead members by emphasizing conflict management, team building, cultural awareness, and school district policies.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

 

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
