Position Title: Area Manager – Office of School Nutrition                             

Location: 1601 Farnsworth – Building Services – Complex C                      

Salary: $18.90 - $26.25 (hourly)

Reports to: Executive Director of Office of School Nutrition

Bargaining Unit: NISP

In accordance with the agreement between the Organization of Non-Instructional Supervisory Personnel (NISP) And the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, Article 6.4, Promotion Procedure, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

Area Manager must manage Office of School Nutrition staff under the direction of Executive Director and Assistant Directors.  Area Manager also monitors and correct performance of all assigned OSN employees.  Area manager incorporates and provide guidance of district rules for staff.  Area manager travels to assigned schools to check the menu items prepared for students in the district.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an Associate degree from an accredited institution with a major in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, Home Economics, Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics or related fields or five years’ progressive management experience in a school food or fast food retail setting.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • ServSafe certification required.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist with the development of nutrition education materials and programs.   Coordinate a program of supervision to meet Board of Education policies and Office of School Nutrition standards as well as USDA guidelines.
  2. Plan and direct the operation of a preparation kitchen and/or a designated number of satellite schools.
  3. Supervise B- Managers/Food Service Specialist or perform task in areas of food preparation, service, merchandising/promotions, equipment maintenance, repairs, replacement, records, ordering, student accountability, personnel, scheduling, and training.
  4. Communicate school and departmental objectives, policies & procedures to staff, administrators, community, parents, and students in the areas of Government and Board guideline compliance.
  5. Inform Principals and Area Directors of activities, progress and problems in the preparation kitchen and its Satellites.
  6. Create and maintain good employee morale and relationship between employees, school staff, student’s community, and vendors.
  7. Maintain services to students and delivery of a well-organized nutritional meal system.
  8. Plan and conduct staff meetings with Preparation Kitchens and Staff.
  9. Conduct orderly and systematic inspections of all assigned schools for the purpose of maintaining efficient operations and assuming compliance with the policies and procedures.
  10. Monitor and develop HACCP Program for every school supervised.
  11. Interview hire and train Office of School Nutrition Food Service Assistants in each assigned school.
  12. Assist and or train teachers and students assigned to the child nutrition program
  13. Conduct on-the-job training for all Office of School Nutrition employees.
  14. Submit accurate, timely records, and reports as required by the department.
  15. Rate and confer with Office of School Nutrition employees, in accordance with the employee rating schedule.
  16. Encourage positive student involvement within school.
  17. Assist the Office of School Nutrition staff in the development of policies and procedures.
  18. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of the Office of School Nutrition.

Internal Applicants
