Position Summary

As a critical member of the DPSCD’s Technology Infrastructure Team, the Physical Security Engineer will be responsible for designing, planning, evaluating, and the administration of the district’s physical security solutions and cable plant. The Physical Security Engineer will act as the primary technical support agent for enterprise level operations of critical systems and infrastructure. This includes documenting and responding to critical incidents, monitoring and managing vendor contracts, and coordinating technical support efforts and projects with District departments and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications


·       Minimum High School Diploma or GED with 5 years of working experience

·       NJATC(IBEW) Apprenticeship or electrical trade school preferred

·       Certification in NICET, AMAG, OCULARIS, AVIGILON, AXIS a plus

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in security camera and access control system installation and support.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in Video Management System installation and support.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the installation and support of enterprise, physical security systems (i.e. intrusion detection, fire, etc.)
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the integration of multiple physical security systems
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience installation of wiring and signaling equipment including access control, video surveillance, IP cameras, and basic security system equipment.
  • Honeywell Ademco commercial burglar alarm experience.
  • Organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and directed – independent worker; effectively prioritize and multi-task.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to provide on-call support twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office.
  • Job requires installing devices while on all size ladders, lifting equipment up to 50 lbs., and working in confined spaces (crawl space).
  • Must have clean driving record to be an active vehicle driver.
  • Must provide own hand tools and work boots.


Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director of Technology Infrastructure, the Enterprise Physical Security Engineer shall:

  1. Install, maintain, or repair security systems, alarm devices, or related equipment.
  2. Conducts system wide preventative maintenance program for physcial security technology equipment.
  3. Services and installs Amag access control systems.
  4. Services and installs Honeywell Ademco burglar alarm systems.
  5. Services and installs video surveillance systems.
  6. Services and installs Ai-phone intercom systems.
  7. Services and installs Garrett metal detectors.
  8. Under supervision, collaborates with stakeholders regarding the appropriate design and implementation of system wide physical security technologies.
  9. Test and repair circuits and sensors, following wiring and system specifications.
  10. Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software, and basic network related problems encountered by end-users of the network. Has a basic understanding of IPV4 and how to assign a computer/nic/camera an IP address.
  11. Mount raceways and conduits as needed.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit public schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit public schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit public schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
