Salary: $12.36/hr

Reports to: Program Supervisor, Office of Student Transportation

In accordance with the Agreement between American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

As a significant member of the DPSCD’s Office of Student Transportation, the Assistant Dispatcher will coordinate daily route coverage for bus attendants, complete transportation reports, monitor employee attendance, report incidents to schools and department leadership, compile student attendance reports and support the mission of the department.  The Assistant Dispatcher will work with transportation service providers to execute daily plans and resolve any transportation issues that may arise to ensure that the district can fulfill its commitment to its students, families, staff and community partners. The Assistant Dispatcher will be specifically responsible for ensuring the staffing requirements of each bus route are met, adjusting to daily staffing levels, and monitoring progress regularly.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a transportation environment
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient with desktop/laptop computers
  • Possess a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with empathy and professionalism
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Must possess knowledge of school bus operations and best practices

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist in daily assignment of bus attendants to routes in the morning and afternoon.
  2. Implement route changes daily as required based on daily staffing levels.
  3. Communicate and post early school dismissals.
  4. Communicate vehicle equipment concerns to supervisor.
  5. Log late routes and report to supervisor.
  6. Answer incoming phone calls and provide call backs to parents and schools as required.
  7. Assist bus attendants and DPSCD vendors with installation of safety equipment including harnesses, harness anchors, wheelchair straps and car seats.
  8. Work collaboratively with DPSCD vendors, school administrators and department management as needed to facilitate and coordinate various aspects of assigned tasks.
  9. Work collaboratively with the Office of Student Transportation routing department and make route change recommendations.
  10. Assist in compiling daily bus attendant attendance records.
  11. Assist in compiling daily student ridership records for Medicaid billing purposes.
  12. Assist in compiling and reporting undesirable incidents.
  13. Assist in scheduling bus attendants for field trips and additional assignments when required.
  14. Log all field trip and additional assignments for payroll purposes.
  15. Support management with special projects and requests.
  16. Prepare, review, and submit reports and other documents as required.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

 

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
