Reports to: Warehouse Floor Lead

Bargaining Unit: Teamsters

In accordance with the Agreement between the Teamsters Local 214 and the School District of the City of Detroit the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary

Detroit Public Schools Community District owns and operates a 218,900 square foot warehouse facility that stores furniture, curricular materials, commercial kitchen equipment and other student instructional tools. We are currently looking to fill the position of Warehouse Driver to contribute to the daily operations of this facility, including freight, receiving, returns and transfers. This facility also handles the District’s inter-office mail delivery to its schools and administrative offices.

The successful applicant will maintain high levels of accuracy in day-to-day operations, lead and develop the warehouse team and provide responsive and efficient customer service to within our District.



  • High School diploma required, Associate’s Degree Preferred.


  • Must provide evidence of a minimum of two (2) years of related experience and/or training, current driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) endorsement with class B with air brakes and Forklift license.

  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed to meet business needs
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Detail oriented with strong follow-through; able to read and type numbers accurately
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Self-motivated and team oriented; works harmoniously and effectively with others
  • Clean area attire must be worn
  • Able to demonstrate follow-through on work assignments
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Good attendance

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for a long period of time, alternating between sitting and standing
  • Frequently perform the following: reach with both arms; twisting/turning; bending; kneeling; squatting; pushing; pulling; lifting; carrying; climbing ladders
  • Lifting: Frequently lift and carry 11 to 20 lbs. Occasionally lift and carry 21 to 50lbs.; Team lifting above 50 lbs. as need


Essential Functions:

  1. Report to assigned area and Prepare workstation with necessary materials for the day’s work
  2. Ability to comprehend and follow Work Instructions
  3. Ability to read work orders and labels
  4. Pull orders accurately in preparation for prompt shipment. Verify and enter receipt of incoming shipments.
  5. Maintain information and entries in computer system for all incoming and outgoing transactions of materials and production.
  6. Verify identifying information and quantities.
  7. Pick orders for distribution.
  8. Collect inventory from schools and administrative buildings, when necessary.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Warehouse Manager and/or Floor Lead.
  10. Check for safety defects and functionality of Forklifts, truck and all equipment before starting and report any problems immediately.
  11. Assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed.
  12. Fill in as substitute in other position(s), during break schedules.
  13. Ability to identify problems, collect data and retain solutions.
  14. Ability to operate a Pallet Jack.
  15. Maintain good housekeeping practices. Keep warehouse area clean at all times.
  16. Be self-motivated, carrying out routine responsibilities with little supervision.
  17. Assist in training all new employees in similar positions.
  18. Working together and communicating as a team, with supervisors and customers
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.


Security Clearance

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
