In accordance with the Agreement between the Non-Instructional Supervisory Personnel and the School District of the City of Detroit, Article XV, Promotions and Transfers, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary

Detroit Public Schools Community District owns and operates a 218,900 square foot warehouse facility that stores furniture, curricular materials, commercial kitchen equipment and other student instructional tools. We are currently looking to fill the position of Warehouse Manager to handle daily operations of this facility, including freight, receiving, returns and transfers. This facility also handles the District’s inter-office mail delivery to its schools and administrative offices.

The successful applicant will maintain high levels of accuracy in day-to-day operations, lead and develop the warehouse team and provide responsive and efficient customer service to within our District.



  • High School diploma required, Associate’s Degree Preferred.


  • Must provide evidence of a minimum of two (2) years of related experience and/or training and Forklift license.

  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed to meet business needs
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Detail oriented with strong follow-through; able to read and type numbers accurately
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Self-motivated and team oriented; works harmoniously and effectively with others
  • Clean area attire must be worn
  • Able to demonstrate follow-through on work assignments
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Flexibility-shift time may vary slightly due to mail volume or late deliveries
  • Reliable and punctual attendance


Essential Functions:

  1. Supervises at least 4 full-time direct reports.
  2. Collaborates with Warehouse Manager to effectively operate logistics plan.
  3. Fully engaged with process on floor to actively lead and supervise teammates.
  4. Communicates daily through operational start up meetings, making sure all work instructions, daily workflow activities and safety practices are being followed.
  5. Initiates positive methods of driving teammate excellence through follow up, providing consistent and fair feedback on performance. Act through coaching and counseling to correct behaviors.
  6. Conduct operations in a manner which promotes safety. Conduct weekly safety meetings during start of shift with teammates. Maintain a safe working environment through participation of safety training and weekly walk through.
  7. Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work environment.
  8. Supervise the operations of the team to achieve prescribed objectives.
  9. Develop and maintain a productive work team through cross training, sound communication and positive motivational techniques.
  10. Ability to work effectively in a multi-tasking required environment.
  11. Provide courteous and respectful customer service in high pressure situations to internal/external customers.
  12. Assure the integrity of the inventory and assist in conducting physical inventories.
  13. Assist Warehouse Manager on special projects as required.
  14. Assist in maintaining the security of the facility.
  15. Manage the floor and be sure shifts run smoothly
  16. Inspect packages and report damages or discrepancies
  17. Support new employees as they are on-boarded
  18. Ability to comprehend and follow Work Instructions
  19. Ability to read work orders and labels
  20. Pull orders accurately in preparation for prompt shipment. Verify and enter receipt of incoming shipments.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Warehouse Manager
  22. Assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed
  23. Maintain good housekeeping practices. Always keep warehouse area clean
  24. Be self-motivated, carrying out routine responsibilities with little supervision
  25. Work together and communicate as a team, with supervisors and customers
  26. Perform other duties as assigned


Security Clearance

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
