Position Summary:

The Sign Language Technician’s primary purpose is to assist in improving academic achievement and behavior of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students in grades K-12 both in the general education setting and center-based programs. They will work directly with teachers to assist students in reinforcing sign language, primarily in the areas of English/ELA and mathematics. The Technician will also plan, implement, and assess intervention services to ensure fidelity; enable teachers’ capacity to effectively implement instructional practices for individual students or small groups of students. Technicians will work alongside classroom teachers in planning and implementing English/ELA and math intervention initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Applicant must also show evidence of sign language skills with a level 3 or higher on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASPI) or 3.0 or higher EIPA certification.
  • Applicants must also show evidence on the coursework in Mathematics, Computer, English/ELA, Reading, Science or Bilingual
  • Minimum two (2) year of actual work experience working directly with students.
  • Experience using computer applications/information technology to assist and/or facilitate instruction with students.
  • Understanding of and commitment to implementing academic and behavior intervention activities for students in grades K-12 and or center-based programs.


Essential Functions

  1. Assist students with sign language skills.
  2. Monitor/assist with mobility needs of the students as they transition.
  3. Monitor/assist with the behavioral needs of DHH students. This may include the collection and maintenance of data.
  4. Assist the teacher with planning and implementing instructional tasks assigned to individual or small groups of students
  5. Work directly with the teacher to assist students in reinforcing, sign language skills, mathematics, English/ELA or Reading, Computer Bilingual skills, and or positive behavior strategies to develop and implement interdisciplinary learning experiences
  6. Assist students in improving their sign language, Mathematics, Computer and/or English/ELA skills through the integration of technology
  7. Assist teacher to monitor the successful implementation of the school’s curriculum
  8. Collaborate with teacher to provide consistent, intensive, and targeted instruction to students
  9. Motivate students to achieve higher levels of performance
  10. Participates in required professional development
  11. Demonstrate efficient use of the Microsoft Office Suite
  12. Build good interpersonal relationships and establish positive rapport with students, parents and colleagues
  13. Establishing a learning climate that promotes educational proficiency that contributes to the career development of all students
  14. Maintain professional conduct that models a positive self-concept and well-being
  15. Support the mission of the district and school in its efforts to provide a safe, healthy and productive learning environment
  16. Data collection and report writing
  17. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal /Supervisor DHH /or Designee related to the Signing Technician DHH position.


Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
