Position Title: Special Instructor, Construction Trade

Location: Randolph Career Technical Center

Salary: $28.74/hr.

Reports to: Principal

Bargaining Unit: DFT

In accordance with the Agreement between American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

The Special Instructor assists the Day Trade Teacher with instructional tasks assigned to individual students or small groups of students in-classroom. Observe student performance and assist in the implementation of appropriate instructional activities planned by the Day Trade Teacher. The Special Instructor assistance will enable teachers’ capacity to effectively implement identified core or universal instructional practices for individual students or small groups of students resources.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide proof of High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Candidate must have two (2) years or 4000 hours of related work experience in Plumbing and Pipefitting. The experience must be within ten (10) years of application. 
  • Candidate must be able to work with high school aged youth on foundations of plumbing and theory, safety, tools, basic math, general blue-print reading, plastic, copper, and cast-iron pipe and fittings, fixtures and faucets, and introduction to drain, waste, vent, and water distribution systems. 
  • Entry-level problem-solving skills are a must, with strong technical aptitude. 

 

Essential Functions

  1. Assist students with the reading and comprehension of terms/technical language associated with the Plumbing field.
  2. Adheres to school policies and procedures, and the direction of and response to administrative supervision.
  3. Instructs students in the area of plumbing & pipefitting, and general construction trades.
  4. Works individually with students in learning safety rules and regulations while using power tools.
  5. Reviews material with students prior to assessments.
  6. Enforces classroom policies and maintains discipline through effective classroom management techniques.
  7. Supports Day Trade Teacher in daily record-keeping of attendance and grades.
  8. Presents subject matter to students in a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, small-groups and demonstrations.
  9. Seeks out and participates in professional development and training.
  10. Utilizes the community as a learning resource and as an extension of the classroom for students.
  11. Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check. 

 

External Applicants 

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
