In accordance with the agreement between the Detroit Federation of Para-Professionals and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, Article XVI, Vacant Positions, the following vacancy is announced:

Position Summary:

The Montessori Para-Educator assist both Pre-Kindergarten student and teacher with classroom preparation and task to support the learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Application Requirements: Must be willing to attend and complete 45 hours of Montessori Assistant Training during the 2020 summer.

  • Must possess and provide evidence of High School Diploma or GED certification.
  • Sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited institution; or passing scores on the Work keys basic skills assessment test.
  • A Child Development Associate credential (CDA) or Associate Degree in Early Childhood/Child Development, or at least a class in Child Development with a written plan to complete the CDA or Associate Degree in Early Childhood/Childhood/Child Development.  
  • You must contact Henry Ford Community College or Macomb Community College for Work keys test dates (If taken before June 30, 2017) or the ETS para pro test.
  • Working with school age youth helpful.

Essential Functions

  1. Assist the teacher with instructional tasks assigned to individual students or small groups of students.
  2. Assist the teacher with related tasks such as recordkeeping, checking students’ work, preparing and distributing instructional materials, etc.
  3. Serve as a liaison between the school and the family.
  4. Attend Parent-Staff Meetings, during regular working hours.
  5. Participate in in-service workshops.
  6. Observe student performance and assisting in the planning and implementation of appropriate instructional activities.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
