Job Summary

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is redesigning its adult education delivery system to improve essential foundational skills necessary for adults to get a job or improve career outcomes.  Services such as GED, high school diploma and ESL programs will be strategically placed in the community for greater impact. Through a collaborative approach with City workforce staff and adult foundational skills providers, adult learners will have access to high-quality instruction and career training that include wrap around services at an accelerated pace.


Qualifications

Education

Master’s degree preferred in education, school leadership and/or supervision 

Valid administrative certification

Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience in supporting and/or establishing adult education programs
  • Evidence of partnership development and strong community involvement
  • Ability to procure services to provide wrap around services learners may need to succeed in the program.
  • Evidence of the ability to implement and sustain programs with partners across different sectors
  • Minimum 3-years successful contract teaching experience
  • Ability to coach and support teachers to improve their instructional practices
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal communication and writing skills
  • Evidence of managing staff members and resources

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent of Partnerships and Innovation, the Senior Director of Adult Education will have the following key responsibilities:

 

  • Articulate and promote a shared vision for the newly redesigned adult education community partnership resulting in the increase in enrollment and improved student performance outcomes
  • Provide monitoring and oversight of adult education programs to ensure desired outcomes are fully realized
  • Work with partners to develop and advance regional solutions
  • Support the development of a marketing campaign for the branding of Adult Education
  • Support teachers in the instructional delivery model that could include contextual integrated training, career pathways and bridges (on-ramps), workplace based programs and/or accelerated intensive programming
  • Provide instructional observations and coaching support to teachers
  • Review and update curriculum resources and provide professional learning opportunities for teachers
  • Implement career readiness and essential skills program to ensure students transition successfully to the workplace
  • Evaluate teacher effectiveness using the District’s teacher evaluation tool.
  • Promote equity and access to programs regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, exceptional students and prior academic achievement
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate wrap around supports to ensure all adult learners have the skills and confidence for a smooth transition to work
  • Support and monitor the GED Testing Center
  • Supervise the Adult Ed Child Care program
  • Development an intake process to identify service requirements and develop individualized learning plans
  • Leverage existing resources and expand business, government and community partnerships
  • Recruit, hire and evaluate program staff
  • Work with partners to ensure facilities and equipment support the delivery of high-quality programming
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Superintendent.

 

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit public schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit public schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit public schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
