Position Summary:

The Athletic Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, administration and implementation of a comprehensive athletics program for coaches and students enrolled at local high schools.  The position of Athletic Coordinator involves a number of complex tasks, including, but not limited to: sports scheduling, eligibility, transportation, uniforms/equipment purchase/management/inventory, emphasis on community and parental involvement, strong operating knowledge of fiscal responsibilities, tickets sales, game staff, revenue deposits for the schools, field/facilities-readiness, the ability to implement evaluation procedures and develop athletic plans that are consistent with District, state and federal policies and guidelines, support for the theory of action for Detroit Public Schools Community District, and the effective communications techniques that provide clear, timely and accurate information to the schools, parents, District, state and federal agencies and the public. 

This position also requires leadership, expertise and management skills to maintain a present home school as well as to collaborate with Athletic Coordinators and Coaches at other schools and the Office of Athletics, to plan, budget, and coordinate effectively with a wide variety of coaches, state, city, governmental agencies, schools, school Districts and with an array of community-based organizations. 

This requires on-going contact with District and other officials both within and outside the school system, including contact with school administrators, school-based staffs and program directors; District agency personnel, state officials, professional consultants, community leaders, associations/organization leaders and parents.

 

The Athletic Coordinator is expected to represent the schools and the school district at a wide spectrum of school, city, state, and community events focusing on setting high standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity; in the areas of coaching, academic expectations, academic eligibility, athletic performance, professional development, related areas and other activities deemed appropriate by Detroit Public Schools Community District.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health, Fitness, Athletic training or related fields.
  • Master’s degree in Ed Leadership, or Health and Fitness, Athletic Training or related field from an accredited college or university preferred. 

Experience     

  • Five (5) years of related education experience, including three (3) years of classroom teaching experience,
  • Minimum of 5 years coaching/athletics/sports management/athletic coordinator directors’ experience in an urban school setting and/or in a multicultural education environment. 
  • Experience managing budgets and personnel required. 

Duties/Responsibilities and Functions:

 

  1. Oversee all major functions of athletics at local high schools.
  2. Be available for after school, evenings/weekend practices, events and meets.
  3. Be punctual and have good attendance.
  4. Regularly monitor scholar-athletes academic eligibility performance, attendance, behavior, training and development of their individual athletic ability.
  5. Supervise all athletics participating coaches in the building.
  6. Coordinate the sports program in collaboration with the school’s Principal/Administrator/Coaching staff.
  7. Observe and administer all school and District policies.
  8. Ensure the organization and seasonal/annual inventory of all equipment.
  9. Ensure regular programs of practice in and out of season and study table for athletes.
  10. Submit all administrative materials by the deadline.
  11. Work closely with the Office of Athletics when scheduling interscholastic contest and officials/umpires.
  12. Schedule and coordinate coaches’ end of the season/evaluations.
  13. Ensure maintenance of necessary background clearance forms, eligibility forms, physical forms, attendance forms, insurance records and similar paperwork for all student athletes and coaches.
  14. Oversee safety conditions of the facilities or areas and ensure that medical personal are present for assigned sports.
  15. Ensure game officials/umpires are present for scheduled events and that Site Coordinators complete and submit timely payment forms for game staff and officials/umpires.
  16. Administer the athletic programs in accordance with state, conference, and District by-laws.

 

  1. Ensure that all coaches, assistant coaches and volunteers have met the minimum and mandatory certification requirements to remain in compliance with state, conference and district guidelines:

                                                MHSAA CAP 1-2 (mandatory)

                                                MHSAA Online Rules Meeting (mandatory)

                                                AED and Heart Saver CPR Certification (mandatory)

 

  1. Manage the athletic budget of the school in accordance with the District’s cash management and audit procedures. 
  2. Prepare and submit all required budgetary information for both schools.  Follows District’s guidelines regarding school policies and financial transactions. Prepare reports, inventory and recommendations for equipment.  
  3. Provide an atmosphere conducive to good sportsmanship at all times.
  4. Ensure that adequate supervision is provided for all students involved in athletic programs: provides for the safety of participants and spectators by inspecting facilities and equipment and being aware of environmental conditions.
  5. Serve as a positive role model for coaches and student athletes.  
  6. Provide leadership and professional development for courses in improvement and readiness offered within or by the Office of Athletics for coaches, scholar-athletes, as well as self.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
