Position Title: AmeriCorps Student Support Advisor

Location: Various Schools

Salary: May be eligible for living allowance and AmeriCorps educational award of $4,336.50

Reports to: AmeriCorps Program Coordinator

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator, AmeriCorps Student Support Advisors assist partner school administration and staff by supporting positive school culture and climate and increasing students’ connection to school.  Increasing awareness and buy-in around the importance of daily school attendance and promoting a positive school culture is a primary focus for the program.  As AmeriCorps Student Support Advisors, members are responsible for providing school-wide initiatives and supports.  Members also provide one-on-one and small group aid to 10 to 15 students that have been identified, by attendance data and recommendations from school administration, as needing attendance-related support and guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Have a high school diploma/GED
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check requirements/eligibility requirements
  • Have a commitment to community service and the ability to provide service for the complete program year


Essential Functions

  1. Under the direction of the School administration, contribute to the enhancement of overall school culture and climate by service as role models to students, coordinating enrichment activities and engaging families.
  2. Provide one-on-one and small group coaching and support to 10 to 15 focus list students to promote increased school engagement.
  3. Provide weekly Focus List Student Reports, including successes/challenges and support needed, to be shared with school administration.
  4. Communicate Focus List students’ progress with students’ families on a monthly basis.
  5. Create and/or identify activities and initiatives that appeal to students’ needs and interests to increase students’ engagement with school.
  6. Understand and support school-level and district-level Positive Behavior in Schools (PBIS) strategies.
  7. Create, support and/or co-lead events, projects and programs to recognize and celebrate student growth and achievement.
  8. Plan and host parent informational sessions to communicate and bring awareness to school, district, and community level resources.
  9. Regularly review and assess student-level data with school administration and staff to gauge the effectiveness of interventions and support.
  10. Maintain a cooperative relationship with school administration, staff and community at all times.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit public schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit public schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit public schools security clearance. At point of offer to hire, you will be responsible for a non-refundable payment of $64.50 via Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover Card, cashier's check, or money order, payable to the DPSCD Police Department. No personal checks or cash is accepted.
