Salary Range: $81,500 base salary plus opportunities for salary differntials and performance compensation

Job Type: Administrative

Applicants must show evidence of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Applicants must possess and provide evidence of both:

  1. Valid State of Michigan Teacher Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education, and
  2. School Administrator Certificate

The district anticipates the development of an aspiring administrators’ academy. Participation and completion of the program may be a requirement to hold and continue in the position if selected.


Successful candidates will demonstrate possession of the following:

  1. Minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience with an annual rating of effective (E), or highly effective (HE).
  2. Proven experience serving in a leadership capacity (i.e., school improvement chair, lead teacher, etc.)
  3. Exemplary presentation skills, organizational skills and communication (speaking, listening, and writing) skills;
  4. Strong technology skills including competence in the use of technology to prepare and complete reports and communications.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of current educational research and ability to translate into classroom and school practice.
  6. Evidence of skills analyzing and interpreting student achievement data and utilizing that data to increase student achievement.

 General Duties/Responsibilities & Functions:

  1. Supervises school personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing professional growth and achieving overall objectives of the school’s curriculum.
  2. Model, identify, discuss and provide feedback on effective pedagogical strategies.
  3. Supervise instruction, including monitoring of lesson plans and provide actionable feedback.
  4. Provide professional development opportunities and establish Professional Learning Communities focused on closing the achievement gap.
  5. Develop programs aligned with the School Improvement Plan and the District Academic Plan.
  6. Interpret, review, and monitor data systems relative to student assessments.
  7. Access the student information system for the purposes of creating, monitoring, and reviewing schedules, reports, and student data.
  8. Communicates relevant policies and procedures with regard to student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff and parents.
  9. Contact and communicate directly with parents/guardians on a regular basis to ensure parent awareness of and involvement in their child’s school performance.
  10. Conduct teacher observations and assist with the performance evaluation process.
  11. Work and collaborate effectively with teachers and other school-based personnel to develop and implement individual student support plans.
  12. Assist with the management of the school’s operational processes (i.e., budgeting, facility maintenance, grant compliance, scheduling, etc.)
  13. Maintain accurate data, records, etc. to document all activities conducted and services provided.
  14. Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the principal.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance.
