In accordance with the agreement between the Organization of School Administrators (O.S.A.S.) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, Article 6.4, Promotion Procedure, the following vacancy is announced:

Reports to: Assistant Director,  Medicaid & PowerSchool Special Programs (PSSP)

Position Summary:
As a significant member of the Office of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) and PowerSchool Special Programs (PSSP) team, the SIS Support Coordinator is responsible for providing school SIS teams with direct support and improving systems for SIS training and onboarding. The SIS Support Coordinator will focus on the following three areas:

  • School-Level PSSP Support: Providing cohorts of school PSSP teams with quick, complete, and accurate guidance in response to their phone inquiries, emails, and other support requests.
  • Resource and Training Development: Producing materials to build a robust resource bank for remote and live PSSP training and onboarding for new ESE staff.
  • Organizing Data: Collecting, organizing, and acting on SIS support metrics to inform the direction of the team’s strategies for centralized and grassroots SIS support for schools.

The ideal SIS Support Coordinator has a strong technical understanding of how teachers and staff use PowerSchool and is someone who recognizes the impact that their work approach has on students and educators and cares deeply about system improvement for the District.




Preference will be given to candidates that possess and provide evidence of a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or candidates with sufficiently demonstrated experience effectively supporting SIS end-users.


We are looking for talented people who are passionate about transforming the District and making a significant difference in the lives of public school students, parents, principals, teachers, and central office employees. The ideal candidate will have:


  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working daily with a school district’s student information system.
  • Some knowledge of utilizing Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of Special Education Compliance and IEP Development is a plus
  • Knowledge of or experience with Special Education Count related to the MDE Pupil Accounting Manual
  • Experience supporting others through changes and new initiatives that involve influencing the practices of school staff
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a customer service-oriented mindset
  • Organizational skills to collect and report on data, conduct analyses, and propose recommendations for improvements to training and support systems, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects within a data driven accountability environment


  • Demonstrated knowledge of or prior experience implementing PowerSchool/Power Teacher Pro and Special Education and/or other SISs preferred
  • Experience in pupil accounting-principles, practices, and methods strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of District and school-level business processes and student functionality related to SIS systems
  • Understanding of the requirements and timelines for student data submissions to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI), and the U.S. Department of Education


Position Job Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Medicaid & PowerSchool Special Programs, the Support Coordinator shall:

Essential Functions

  1. Act as the first line of support for designated cohorts of school SIS teams by responding to support inquiries quickly, completely, and accurately over the phone, online, and in person.
  2. Collaborate with other ESE and PSSP team members to stay abreast of how the District’s Special Programs is configured to support high quality data practices, efficient use, and new or innovative applications 
  3. Develop top-tier help desk and support mechanisms for SIS end users and provide logistical support and materials for remote and live SIS trainings
  4. Develop, deliver, and maintain professional development, reference materials, and support resources to ensure the effective use of the SIS by a wide range of stakeholders
  5. Create development pathways to expand the role and capacity of school SIS responsible for submitting data, supporting end users, and analyzing data to benefit the school in data-driven decision making
  6. Assist other departments and teams to integrate Special Programs with the SIS application and initiatives
  7. Participate in and contribute to knowledge management systems to help improve district communication and accelerate continuous improvement
  8. Demonstrate an effective approach to team building including clarity of purpose and shared responsibility.
  9. Value, solicit, and integrate team members’ different perspectives effectively
  10. Build effective relationships with manager, staff members and colleagues to implement District strategic plan
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director, or designee

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of security clearance.

External Applicants

If you are hired to fill a vacant position, you will be required to submit a Detroit Public Schools security clearance.
