Position Summary

 

As a critical member of the DPSCD’s Technology Infrastructure Team, the Senior Network Architect will be responsible for network design and implementation,  upgrades, and advanced troubleshooting of enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), firewalls, Voice Over IP, wireless networking, network access and policy controls, and systems monitoring. This includes assessing, developing and implementing technical plans and strategies to ensure optimal health and security of the district network, as well as identifying opportunities for improvement, expansion and innovation.     
 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Business or related major is preferred
  • CCNA minimal requirement; CCNP Certification is desired

 

Experience:

We are looking for talented people who are passionate about transforming Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) and making a significant difference in the lives of public school students, parents, principals, teachers, and central office employees.
 

  • 5+ years of Experience with Switching (Capacity Planning & VLAN’s), Routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP), WAN Technologies (MPLS, VPLS, VPN) and Security (Fortinet/Cisco Firewalls, IPS).
  • Outstanding troubleshooting and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as a key member of a team as well as independently.
  • Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP, including packet-level traffic analysis.
  • Experience with VoIP, QoS, and IP Telephony technologies.
  • Experience with Cisco Wireless Deployments, Cisco ISE, Cisco Data Center Switching, Security methodology, Load Balancing, VMware, and network monitor tools.
  • Experience with network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. Cisco Prime Infrastructure, SolarWinds, SNMP network tools).
  • Experience in the development of network performance dashboards, SLAs and
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Available for travel to various District locations.

 

 

 

Position Job Responsibilities:

 

Under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director of Technology Infrastructure, the Senior Network Engineer shall:

 

Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for working with the network team to ensure secure network design, establish and enforce system standards; create and maintain accurate technical documentation for WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, Internet, Firewalls, Servers, Video and VoIP solutions.
  2. Responsible for optimizing network performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; scheduling upgrades; perform network optimization, including QoS.
  3. Provide 3rd level support for WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, Internet, Servers, Video and VoIP solutions.
  4. Participate in capacity planning and annual budgeting activities to ensure optimal health of enterprise investments.
  5. Involvement in project work including project management, selection, recommendation, design, testing, and implementation of various solutions.
  6. Work with emerging technologies such as SD-WAN or Data Center products.
  7. Escalate or work with other Engineers to resolve service requests that require assistance to resolve.
  8. Improve customer service, perception, and satisfaction.
  9. Work with the Service Lead and Service Coordinator to ensure requests are resolved quickly and efficiently.
  10. Assist and work with other engineers to complete projects or project follow-up.
  11. Identify and document key issues and areas of weakness
  12. Mentor and grow younger engineers throughout the organization.
  13. Perform network assessments and security audits.
  14. Support internal run and maintain activities, including remote monitoring and management system, respond to alerts, monitor health and seek improvement opportunities.
  15. Provide assistance in the management of vendor relationships.
  16. Participate in after-hours maintenance windows to update, change, and install various systems.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
