Position Summary:
The Assistant Superintendent of High School Redesign is a new position in the DPSCD and will establish and lead DPSCD’s efforts to redesign the high school experience for its 50,000+ students and directly manage the principals of neighborhood high schools. The district is focused on increasing access to college and career ready experiences to ensure all high school students are graduating future-ready. The Assistant Superintendent will be responsible for improving student outcomes at District neighborhood high schools. The Assistant Superintendent will also oversee the implementation of the HS redesign plan by leading and coordinating the work across schools, central office departments, and community partners, navigating complex timelines and logistics across many stakeholders leading to implementation of the plan starting in SY26-27. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent will develop and implement continuous improvement and monitoring plans to ensure the district is effectively and consistently creating strong experiences for students across all high schools, especially neighborhood high schools and their feeder K-8 schools.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field required, Doctoral degree preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful school leadership experience with a record of proven success in supporting strong school performance.
- Previous experience in a central office administrator capacity in a K-12 setting strongly preferred.
- Michigan School Administrator Certification required.
- Experience managing large-scale, cross-departmental projects from planning through implementation
- Demonstrated success leading change management efforts in ways that align with best practices, including buy-in from various stakeholders
- Excellent leadership, collaboration, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
- Demonstrated expertise and strong understanding of high school instructional models and research-backed best practices
- Strong knowledge of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement processes, including using data to evaluate and adjust program effectiveness
Essential Functions:
- Lead the refinement and implementation of the High School Redesign plan by supporting district leadership in decision making based on stakeholder input, evidence-based best practices, and DPSCD specific context
- Plan and execute the implementation of the HS Redesign plan across cross-functional teams, ensuring all milestones are met with precision and within established times
- Develop, supervise and evaluate principals at neighborhood high schools and ensure building leaders adhere to District policies and guidelines.
- Establish and lead professional learning for leaders of traditional neighborhood high schools aligned with the District’s vision and the goals of the high school redesign plan.
- Coordinate the planning for implementation across central office departments by supporting central office departments in identifying priorities and necessary actions to enable implementation
- Liaise with external partners to enable implementation of the redesign plan
- Oversee the creation of structures and systems for ensuring consistent progress towards implementation across all stakeholders, including central office, schools, and community partners
- Set clear, ambitious performance measures for key priorities for both the implementation of the HS redesign plan, and for the desired experiences in neighborhood high schools; create structures for monitoring and continuous improvement
- Prepare and shepherd the HS redesign efforts into regular District functions and ownership over time such that the HS Redesign becomes part of the regular way of work, especially in neighborhood schools.
- Supervise and develop team members, providing clear expectations, mentorship, and fostering professional growth aligned with district goals
- Collaborate with internal departments to drive project success and ensure effective implementation of the HS Redesign plan
- Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including higher education institutions, corporate partners, local businesses, and others
- Attend district leadership meetings, department meetings, as well as Board meetings and Board committee meetings, as needed
- Create regular written summaries and presentations providing progress updates to various stakeholders on the progress and impact of the HS Redesign plan
- Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned
