In accordance with the Agreement between the Organization of School Administrators (O.S.A.S.) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
This position serves as a lead in developing and implementing parent engagement strategies that recognize parents as essential partners in their children’s academic success. It supports the parent involvement policies designed to increase participation in programs, trainings, school events, and other engagement opportunities that strengthen both student achievement and the broader school community.
The role is central to organizing and mobilizing parents through neighborhood-based outreach and canvassing efforts, with a strong focus on promoting and supporting neighborhood schools across Detroit. This includes working closely with both district staff and contracted partners to deliver community education and information that re-establishes meaningful connections between families and schools.
Key responsibilities include coordinating door-to-door outreach, supporting the implementation of core Enrollment, Family and Community Engagement (FACE) programming, meeting Title I parent engagement compliance requirements, and assisting with school-based events that promote parent involvement, enrollment, and student retention.
Additionally, the role will support planning responsive opportunities reflective of communities served, while also fostering strong relationships with families, resolving concerns, and building networks of support through partnerships with faith-based organizations and volunteers. The position will also facilitate training for school staff on the district’s volunteer management system to ensure smooth and effective engagement at the school level.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must possess and provide evidence of a Master’s from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of school and community organizing experience directly engaging stakeholders especially parents and students with Title I funded programs may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
Candidates must possess a minimum of (3) years of experience in organizing and community engagement work. Must have experience developing and executing human service programs within the community and / or in large school districts; familiarity with adult learning theory, delivery of parent training and workshops; experience working across different communities, volunteer coordination, and a track record of success launching new programs and working within a team.
Candidates must also possess the following competencies:
Large scale community organizing and outreach.
Computer Tech Savvy in Microsoft Office Suites and volunteer management programs.
Knowledge of ESEA/ESSA as it relates to Title I Parent/Family/School Involvement.
Experience with parent leadership, school communities and city wide parental and community involvement events, activities, conferences and developing training and workshops.
Demonstrate an understanding of the value of parent engagement in the education of children in Detroit Public Schools Community District.
Must have strong communications and excellent interpersonal skills including a professional, parent/community-oriented demeanor, excellent knowledge of grammar and business correspondence.
Essential Functions:
Manage by objectives leading staff to achieve established metrics.
Oversee the districtwide training and execution of volunteer engagement through each school point of contact.
Co-lead the development and execution of community organizing and outreach plans to support all schools including pre/post count day outreach and activities.
Develop prevention and intervention strategies to eliminate barriers to progress.
Work with department leadership to strengthen relationships internally and externally across service areas.
Volunteer management system processing and coordination with FACE and local school staff.
Website content creation and management for FACE.
Problem solve and intervene as well as make recommendations to resolve conflict.
Participate in door-to-door canvassing efforts throughout the year relative to FACE initiatives.
Support the establishment and growth of a parent organization.
Develop strong working relationships with the Principal, School Parent Outreach Coordinators, parent leaders and other stakeholders within the school community.
Promote FACE initiatives as appropriate across school sites and secure target sites for participations.
Assist with budget spending and management.
Provide training, coaching, and support to Principals, staff, and parents across schools.
Collection and organization of FACE Initiative data for reports via Qualtrics, Microsoft Forms and Excel spreadsheets.
Develop, maintain, and submit bi-weekly updated initiative project plans and progress reports.
Assist in required Title 1 Meetings, Parent Involvement Policy creation (districtwide & schools), and districtwide Title 1 Family Involvement compliance.
Identify and recruit volunteers to engage across DPSCD events.
Oversee and ensure successful faith-based and school advisory council implementation.
Other duties as assigned by Assistant Superintendent, Office of Family and Community Engagement or their designee.
