Salary: $55,000 - $94,000*

Reports to: Exceptional Student Education Supervisor

Bargaining Unit: DFT

Telecommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting.

In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary:

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher provides individualized physical education instruction or services to students in the Division of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) for students with an IEP. Adapted physical education teachers evaluate and assess motor competency, physical fitness, play, recreation, leisure, and sports skills. The Adapted Physical Education teacher supports the development and implementation of IEPs based upon assessment findings.

*DPSCD will offer a $15,000 retention/recruitment certification bonus to existing and new educators in these areas for the 2025-2026 school year. Teachers who teach in a desginated assignment and hold the active endorsement for that assignment will be eligible.   

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency 
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with endorsement in Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (SP) required

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families regarding evidence-based practices for the development of students’ motor activities, including recreation and leisure time activity.
  2. Provide direct instruction in recreation and leisure time activity.
  3. Develop appropriate, measurable IEP goals and objectives as a member of the IEP team.
  4. Plan the Physical Education program to meet student’s needs, interests, and abilities.
  5. Provide ongoing evaluation of student progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
  6. Maintain an appropriate record keeping system and prepare reports.
  7. Consultation with physical education teachers on adaptive techniques for students with adapted physical education needs.
  8. Inform parents of the student’s progress and achievements as necessary.
  9. Engage in regular professional learning opportunities to stay current in evidence-based practices.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly in written and oral communication.
  11. Coordinate opportunities for students to participate in Special Olympics at Local, State, and National level.
  12. Create inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities to participate with peers in general education activities.
  13. Maintain physical education equipment, inventory, and instruct students in proper use of equipment
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
