Position Summary: 

As a critical member of the DPSCD’s Technology Division, the Driver/Forklift Operator plays a key role in the daily operations of the student records and technology assets warehouse. The Driver/Forklift Operator is responsible for safe transportation, organization, and management of student records, technology assets and materials. This role ensures the efficient movement of materials within the warehouse locations, and to and from district location while adhering to safety protocols and maintaining the highest standards of accuracy. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, great organizational and communication skills, and a service-oriented mindset with a knack for solving problems and working with a team.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) endorsement with Class B with air brakes; must have clean driving record. 

  • Certified forklift operator license with experience in forklift operation in a warehouse environment.  

  • Must demonstrate basic math and computer skills. 

  • Basic knowledge of warehouse management systems or inventory software. 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.  

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.  

  • Able to work well under pressure. 

  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50lbs), Team lifting above 50 lbs.(as needed) and ability to handle fragile or sensitive materials.  

  • Ability to stand for a long period of time; alternating between sitting and standing. 

  • Frequently perform the following: reach with both arms, twisting/turning, bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and climbing ladders. 

  • Ability to operate a pallet jack. 

  • Experience working in a warehouse or logistics environment. 

  • Experience working with physical records, archives or technology assets is desirable.  

Essential Functions:

Transport and Delivery 

  1. Review daily delivery and pick-up schedules or request tickets; strategizing the most efficient route to ensure all deliveries are completed on time. 

  1. Prep and pack trucks with appropriate security measures, such as tie-downs or protective coverings, to ensure the safe transportation of sensitive/fragile records and technology items. 

  1. Safely operate district vehicles to transport student records, technology assets and other materials between various district sites and the warehouse. 

  1. Load and unload materials, ensuring careful handling, accurate delivery and signoff. 

  1. Maintain accurate delivery logs and ensure timely transportation of materials.  

Forklift Operations 

  1. Safely operate a forklift and pallet jack for the movement, storage, and retrieval of records, technology assets and other materials within the warehouse. 

  1. Inspect and perform routine maintenance on the forklift to ensure optimal safety and functionality. 

  1. Follow all safety guidelines for operating heavy machinery and handling sensitive materials.  

Warehouse Maintenance 

  1. Support general warehouse upkeep, including unboxing and re-boxing materials, cleaning, organizing bays and materials, as well as ensuring compliance with safety regulations are followed with fidelity. 

  1. Assist in inventory tracking and report any discrepancies to the supervisor. 

  1. Participate in regular safety training and adhere to all district safety protocols. 

  1. Assist in the organization and cataloging of physical student records and technology assets in warehouse.  

  1. Ensure the accurate labeling and storage of records and technology assets to maintain a well-organized warehouse. 

  1. Coordinate with asset management and records staff to ensure efficient workflow and record retrieval. 

Collaboration 

  1. Work closely with the student records and asset management teams, district departments, and school staff to ensure smooth record transfers and operations.  

  1. Communicate effectively with supervisor and report any issues related to transportation, equipment, or records management. 

  1. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
