Salary:  $22.19 - $24.29 per hour  *Increased wage differential if selected for long term vacancy/FMLA assignment during the school year

Reports to: Principal/Designee

Bargaining Unit: Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT)

Benefits Eligible: Based upon assignment, however all Substitutes are initially hired in as a Day to Day Substitute.

*Retiree Substitute Teacher (Sub I – Job Classification AR90)
Benefits: NONE
2024-2025 Rate: $22.19/hr ($177.52 per day)
The substitutes assigned to this classification are retired teachers who MUST work a minimum of ONE (1) day per week. Individuals may work a schedule of one (1) to five (5) days per week.

*Retiree = Retired through the State of Michigan Office of Retirement Services

Day-to-Day or On-Call Substitute (Sub I – Job Classification 9000)
2024-2025 Daily Rate: $22.19/hr ($177.52 per day)
Benefits: NONE
The substitute assigned to this classification work “as-needed” in day-to-day assignments. Individuals MUST work a minimum of three (3) days per week. Individuals may also be assigned a work schedule in advance to fill teacher absences related to district activities such as grant-required professional development or union business.

Substitute FMLA/LOA (Sub II – Job Classification 9500)
2024-2025 Daily Rate: $24.29 per hour ($194.32 per day)
Benefits: (1) Eligible for employee or family medical, dental, and vision (2) Eligible for personal illness days
The substitute assigned to this classification perform the duties of the classroom teacher of record and MUST work five (5) days per week pursuant to the schedule of the absent teacher. Retirees interested in long-term are eligible for assignment (Job Classification AR95).

Substitute Long-Term/Vacancy (Sub II – Job Classification 9500)
2024-2025 Daily Rate: $24.29 per hour ($194.32 per day)
Benefits: (1) Eligible for employee or family medical, dental, and vision (2) Eligible for personal illness days
The substitute assigned to this classification serves in a “VACANCY” assignment and performs duties as the classroom teacher of record, including but not limited to, taking attendance, providing instruction, developing lesson plans, assessment of students, administering grades and attending staff meetings. Employees assigned to this classification MUST work five (5) days per week.  Retirees interested in long-term are eligible for assignment (Job Classification AR95). 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess 60 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university. Must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Must possess 90 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university to be considered for a long-term substitute assignment.  

Essential Functions

  • Evaluate and assess students’ progress on a periodic basis.
  • Monitor individual student’s progress.
  • Receives assignments approved by the Division of Human Resources; selected to work in any school five (5) days per week.
  • Reports to the building Principal or designee at the appointed time per the local school.
  • Reviews with the Principal, Administrator or designee, all plans, schedules and complies with the Student Code of Conduct guidelines during the instructional day. 
  • Maintains, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures for the school and classroom to which he/she is assigned. 
  • Teaches the lesson outlined and described and prepared by the absent teacher, Principal or designee. Consults with the building Principal, Administrator or designee before initiating any teaching or other procedures. 
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class, maintains classroom management and control in class, as well as during lunch and recess periods.
  • Reports, in writing on the form(s) provided by the school secretary, on the day’s activities at the end of each teaching day.
  • Follows all District policies, work rules and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictate.
  • Take corrective measures to enhance student-learning abilities.
  • Instruct students on proper use of equipment, materials, and textbooks.
  • Maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate complete student records, and prepare reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal/Designee.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.

External Applicants

In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
