In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
The ESE Teacher Consultant for Nonpublic Schools provides supportive services and professional development to staff serving K-12 students eligible for special education and enrolled in nonpublic schools (private, parochial, and registered home schools) within Detroit. The teacher consultant provides a wide array of resources, guidance, strategies, and professional development on behalf of students with disabilities throughout the school year.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of a master’s degree in Education or field related to special education
Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a minimum of one special education endorsement
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) approval as a teacher consultant, or possess the credentials required to receive state approval
A minimum of five (5) years successful certified teaching experience; three (3) of which must be in a special education program
Knowledgeable in, and able to facilitate application of, evidence based interventions across content areas for advancing student performance
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems
Training and experience with assessing and observing students with a disability
Solid understanding of Michigan Department of Education requirements for serving nonpublic schools, as well as the special education referral and evaluation process
Extensive knowledge of the development & implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP’s) an Non-Public Service Plans (NSPs)
Essential Functions:
Provides consultative services to nonpublic school staff to build capacity for instructional practices that increase student performance of eligible K-12 students with disabilities.
Supports the evaluation process for determination/redeterminiation of eligibility, including the administration of standardized academic assessments, the scoring, interpretation and reporting of assessment data gathered).
Provides/Conducts ancillary service consultations with nonpublic schools private and parochial schools on behalf of students with disabilities, in alignment with designated timelines.
Provides staff training in the use of effective supports, instructional materials, and resources.
Shares Child Find notices within the Detroit community including, but not limited to, daycare centers, public agencies, physician offices, shelters, etc.
Conducts Child Find initiatives within nonpublic schools (private, parochial, home schools)
Provides written notification, by MDE required due dates, to nonpublic schools within the District about the types of ancillary services available to students.
Provides an annual in-services to nonpublic staff with making appropriate referrals.
Collaborates with school-based evaluation team members to appropriately process referrals for special education evaluations.
Facilitates the initial IEP for eligible Detroit resident students enrolled in nonpublic schools eligible student.
Conducts/Facilitates subsequent nonpublic service plan meetings and reevaluation meetings within mandated timelines.
Provides consultation between nonpublic schools, DPSCD, an other relevant stakeholders regarding special education services and resources.
Maintains accurate records and/or documentation of nonpublic student data regarding, but not limited to, students referred and evaluated for special education eligibility, the outcomes of such evaluations, students with nonpublic service plans, and students for whom parents have refused special education services.
Maintains strict confidentiality as outlined in FERPA and HIPPA.
Builds and maintains positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents and representatives of other school districts and agencies within the community, as well as demonstrate the highest ethical and professional behavior with same.
Assists in the development and maintenance of departmental and District reports as required.
Transports materials and equipment to and from site locations.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Director or designee.
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
