In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced. 

Position Summary: 

The Referral Coordinator is an integral member of the CI Team.  The employee provides ongoing program support, both in the office and in the classrooms, at various school sites, throughout the school district.  The support of the Teacher Consultant - Referral Coordinator is necessary to provide all stakeholders with a wide array of resources, guidance, and professional development, as it relates to the needs of students with moderate cognitive impairments.  Students will benefit from the knowledge, skills and ongoing monitoring of their progress and needs, as provided by the Teacher Consultant-Referral Coordinator.  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency; Successful candidates who possess degrees beyond a Bachelor’s Degree will be eligible for the appropriate salary differential. 

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in Cognitive Impairments. 

  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience; three (3) of which must be in special education 

Essential Functions: 

  1. Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of individualized education programs, as needed. 

  1. Build and maintain positive, cooperative and mutually supportive relationships with instructional staff, students, parents, district representatives and other agencies within the community. 

  1. Assist the instructional staff through conferences, consultations, observations, and demonstrations with classroom organization and implementation and evaluation of instructional strategies materials. 

  1. Assist with group testing programs for measuring the aptitudes, achievement, and interests of students and assist in interpretation of the findings for program development or modification to meet the needs of the students. 

  1. Administer Pre/Post Needs Assessments to teaching staff of students with moderate cognitive impairments. 

  1. Assist MOCI program teachers with curriculum needs, student assessments and data collection. 

  1. Attend IEPT meetings for students with cognitive impairments to support student placement in the appropriate Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). 

  1. Work as a liaison between DPSCD and Public-School Academies (PSAs); 

  1. Provide strategies and supports to teachers of students with moderate cognitive impairments in the MICI Program to ensure students remain in the LRE. 

  1. Conduct or provide staff development sessions for teachers/paraprofessionals 

  1. Support initiatives to increase parental engagement. 

  1. Participate in faculty, school and parent meetings and programs, sharing observations, issues and resources available. 

  1. Assist teachers in selection of instruments for assessing learner needs. 

  1. Assist teachers with designing special education programs, as needed, in the LRE. 

  1. Make referrals to other education professionals/staff members. 

  1. Be available, upon request, to local and area administrators regarding support for instructional personnel. 

  1. Recommend modifications and accommodations for identified learning problems 

  1. Analyze student performance data and make recommendations for remediation and enrichment. 

  1. Be responsible for maintaining and completing all periodic and specifically requested program reports, in a timely manner. 

  1. Assist in the development and maintenance of annual reports, as required 

  1. Provide follow-up to teachers who have participated in professional development activities to ensure acquired skills are implemented in the classroom. 

  1. Transport materials and equipment to and from site locations. 

  1. Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the MOCI Supervisor (or Designee). 

Security Clearance: 

Internal Applicants 

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
