Salary:  $18.25/hr.

Hours:  8 hours per day/40 hours per week 

Bargaining Unit:  AFSCME or DFP

Reports to: Area Manager

Telecommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting

Position Summary:

The Food Service Worker is expected to provide guidance and customer service toward students and staff. Food Service Workers prepares, produces, heats, cooks, and serves a variety of foods from fresh, canned, dry, or frozen state and assists in other related tasks in a designated food service production and/or service area and performs cleaning and sanitizing duties according to food services operating standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D Certificate preferred.
  • Able to accept instruction and work in a team environment.
  • Physical:  walking, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, kneeling, lifting and carrying.
  • Ability to lift between 10-50 pounds based on need and specific tasks.
  • Experience working with students and/or volunteers and diverse communities.
  • Interest and familiarity with issues related to local food and food access.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach or quat and lift between 10-50 lbs. based on need and specific tasks.
  • Skill in developing positive interpersonal relationships, successful work relationships in dealing with supervisory personnel and sensitivity to students and community needs.

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, the Food Service Worker will: 

  1. Assist with food preparation activities, including supper.
  2. Assist with cafeteria counter service.
  3. Serve food according to all United States Department of Agriculture USDA and National School Lunch Program guidelines and regulations-inclusive of District and MDE Fresh Fruit/Vegetable and other Farm to Fresh programs. 
  4. Ensure that safe food handling techniques and methods are maintained during all food preparation and service.
  5. Work in food service and food production areas as needed.
  6. Be responsible for trash removal from kitchen and dining areas.
  7. Assume the responsibility for handling stock. 
  8. Assume the responsibility for mopping and sweeping the kitchen area.
  9. Assume the responsibility for spot wet mopping and sweeping the dining area.
  10. Assist with the general sanitation of pots, pans, utensils, dining tables and the kitchen area.
  11. Assist with the washing and de-gumming of table and chairs.
  12. Assist with the washing of windows and walls.
  13. Maintain DPSCD’s 2.5-acre food production site, and practice food growing, processing, and distribution safety.
  14. Support and maintain DPSCD’s 80+ school gardens.
  15. Provide upkeep of food development and production areas associated with district and MDE Fresh Fruit/Vegetable and other Farm to Fresh programs.
  16. Ensure food handling techniques and methods are maintained during all phases of food products associated with the MDE Fresh Fruit/Vegetable and other Farm to Fresh programs.
  17. Perform all other food service, cafeteria and school garden related duties as assigned.

Internal Applicants
